Just wondering who treats their employees the best. I see a few don't like NS, well, if ya could, who would ya want to work for? I had always heard good things about BN(pre merger) and the UP.
I've been 34 years on the NYC-PC-CR, mgmt has been easier to work for the last 10 yrs or so- no more strongarm tactics, however, I don't think they exactly go out of their way to make the employee "happy" in his work, nor are their any Christmas type gifts, etc or "bonus's" to the workers-just mgmt. I have talked to crews from the CSXT who deliver cars to my yard and they seem pretty satisfied-even get shares of stock as a bonus (I think that's what the guy meant)- nobody has anything good to say about working for the NS.
i love the ns.i mean what other place could you work for that watches your every move to make sure you don't screw up?it makes me feel good that they care for me enough to yell at me and let me know if i break a rule.plus they just love to give their employees little unscheduled vacations, more family time who could ask for a better place to work?the part i love the most is if someone gets hurt they really care for them.they will first make you fill out all of their paperwork while you are in pain.then they will make you show them where you got hurt and how it happened, just to make sure you are telling the truth.then they will take you to their doctor who will tell you there is nothing wrong with you and you are ok to work.gosh that place is the best. i have heard that the bn was a good place to work for,but the bnsf is now kinda taking after the ns.but i dont know if it is true,i don't work for them. ------------------ anyone need a car call ed pinkley, home of the pinkley taurus. 'Best' might be a relative thing. Maybe 'Lesser of the evils' would be more meaningful. I'd just like to hear of a carrier that actually suspected, even for a moment, that their employees were real people instead of Human Resources.
I think you hit the nail on the head, Rule281. Human resources, or rather the HR department. Who's going to have their backs against the wall when the revolution comes? No prizes for voting HR! Gary.
Defintly NOT the Brand New Sante Fe. I don'tknow much about other RR's so but it sounds like our managers train at the same place as the NS, Except with more budget cuts, maintence cuts, crew cuts.
I've heard of some good things about CSX, higher pay than most other railroad, you work less than 10 hours consecutively and get atleast 9 hours of off duty until being called to assignment. They are souposedly good about workers having to get off work for certainreasons, (death, holidays, etc.) I wish I could work for them (I'll try to anyway) ------------------ TrainBoard.com MEMBER #204 Appalachian & Atlantic Model Railroad "QUALITY at WORK with SAFTEY in MIND"
Railroaders in the South always felt that what is now CSXT was a better place to work than NS. After, who but NS thought a plastic bag was an appropriate toilet? On the other hand, mosty short lines in the South had air conditioned cabs a decade before the Calss I's. Work environment and work responsibilities are a two-edged sword. If employees insist on behaving like children they will be treated like children. Where people work together toward the common goal of providing good customer service to insure adequate profits and salaries everyone can enjoy their work and a feeling of accomplishment. I have known some union people over the years though that hated the customer, who was the one actually putting bread on the table, worse than the "suits". They felt they'd have a pretty good job if the damned customers didn't have the balls to want something so unreasonable as their freight delivered on time! The best place to work, bar none, is a locally owned non-union short line.
Hey Gregg, came over from Railserve hey? Welcome to Trainboard! Watash told me about this place a few months ago, and I've been here every since! talk soon.. ------------------ Drew What's that? A train horn? Sorry, gotta go!
Hey Gregg, the best RR to work for might be the one on TV that hired those twenty year old girls to "drive" the trains (with the plastic bags)! I can picture it now! (snicker, guffaw, slobbber, choke!) I got a kick out of the little blonde (training to be an engineer on a diesel freight), that said, "The best thing about this job is that the train can "stear on its own" so it will be easier to put on my make up." Did you see that quiver at the corner of the instructor's mouth? HA-a-a-a! Please, Guys, don't stand anywhere close to a crossing anymore to get photos, one of these girls might see a sale on women's clothes and "drive" her 18,000 ton train in to get a new blouse! ------------------ Watash #982
well hmmmm.the unions have done a lot for the railroad buisness.the company would run all over the employees if it weren't for the unions.all of the non union labor in the town i work in get paid $8.00 a hour and manditory 10 hour work shifts for the yard they work in.and i make $155.00 a day for a 8 hour shift and overtime after that.the unions have also tried to make the railroad a safer place to work. now to my second point.all these 20 year olds running trains.for some reason older people forget when they were young.although i do feel that they make people engineers to quickly, they used to hire people right off the street and make them engineers right away.you dont consider that scarry?and the whole woman thing i wont touch that.but i do feel that there are men and there are women. ------------------ anyone need a car call ed pinkley, home of the pinkley taurus.
I'll agree the unions have done a lot for the railroad business. Why, they've run off at least as much freight as the young clueless MBA's the railroads are using for marketing types these days. I have a low opinion of the rail unions from my PRR days in Baltimore. Customers could not get hold of a freight office because the clerks' shop steward was pimping for his string of prostitutes. A train crew told to switch a customer at night retaliated by not bothering to open the gate and running the car beyond the end of the siding and overturning a trailer. Union leaders care no more for workers than management, they just view them as a source of dues.
20-year-olds...I could be an engineer in just four years And I wouldn't mind "driving" a train with those 24-year-old girls All kidding aside, I'm looking forward to workin' for the Railroad. Now there's CPRail, and UP here in Milwaukee..any suggestions? ------------------ Drew What's that? A train horn? Sorry, gotta go!
what show has 20-year old girls runnin trains?!! i gotta see this! Dave ------------------ NS "We need more SD40s!!!" Brakeman

That was one of those "Expose It" shows about how it is different today than it used to be, and why there are so many wrecks. On PBS I think. I'll record it if it comes back, I wasn't home at the time, so couldn't record it. I know why CPrailfan wants to run engines with the blonde engineers! Forget it! I already got those bags staked out, I can hold them just as well as you can. Besides I have had more practice! ------------------ Watash #982
Hey Watash, I see you've still got steam up. Keep talking about 20 year old blonde engineers and Jan might kick you right back to flagman. LOL.
Yeah I already got caught, she sneered and informed me she didn't think I was wired for 220. (But she didn't say I couldn't hold the bagies! ------------------ Watash #982
