Hi all! Just to let ya know the benchwork has been started for the Moose River Railroad Co. [IMG] I'm going with what worked for me in the past which was the L girder method.

As a side note, I priced out some 2" foam (pink stuff). For a 2'by 8' piece it's $10.90 [IMG] at the Home Depot.

May have to reevaluate that. I'll keep ya all posted!

Congrats Moose [IMG]!! When do we get the pics??? If you are interested, 2 x 4 sheets of EXTRUDED foam (bead board) are about 2 bucks a sheet at Home Depot. They work well for the layout base! Happy Modeling!!

Getting benchwork done is a great motivator. I know you are still building, but I find it is almost a high looking at the benchwork as it goes up. I have more to do, but I can honestly say I am about 80% done, but the last 20% is going to be a bear. I like to take a coffee early in the morning and stand in the room and visualize what is going to go in (and groan at the money it is going to cost...lol).

But I am having fun. I know you will be looking at your ever nearer completion benchwork, drooling to get the track in...and don't forget the backdrop...and the lighting...and the.... and the ...and the....lol. I know you're having fun.

I started to go the L girder with my new layout but changed my mind. I went with the 1 1/2" pink styrofoam supported by 3/4 plywood ripped into 5" strips. The spacers between the long 5" peices of plywood are 24" apart. Everything is screwed and glued in sections. This setup makes it easy to dismantle and move if I ever have to. You can check out my web page for pictures of the process as it has progressed. http://www.members.iquest.net/~leghome/index.html
14 months ago the layout room area was part of the garage and now is a great model RR room.

Way to go Moose, I know you and Andy are having fun. My dad used to (try) to build something when I was 4 and I was his "hand me the...." man. Sometimes I was bringing him the wrong tool, but I was learning. Mom used to make a lot of cookies and milk in those days, (to keep me occupied so daddy could get something done)! Later years, Dad would laugh about it, but he was always patient and never got tired of telling me the same thing over and over, until I got it right. (That I know of)HA! You are a good daddy Moose. Enjoy. [IMG]

    UPDATE:
I finished section #1 today (up to and including joists) I'm starting section 2 tomorrow. Each section is 5X8 for a total layout size of 5X16. This way I can break it down when it's time to move to a permanent location.

Once section 2 is complete, I'll start adding extruded foam board. Section 2 will have a 3X5 elevated area on the end. This will allow the trains to negotiate a grade or two and add another destination and will also hide the entrance to the hidden staging yard that will run the back of the layout as well as add a couple tunnels [IMG]

Still working on a web page, so just a little while longer and I'll post a couple pics [IMG] . If 10-87 still has the rough draft, maybe he can post the track plan. He gets the credit for it. I only modified it slightly when I got it from him. (Definately owe him a beer) And for those curious, this is a Unitrack layout. The hidden staging yard is atlas flex and switches but the rest is Kato [IMG] .

Ah Darth Vador runs the trains in the 21st Century! He would scare little kid waving at the engineer, and Darth pokes his head out the cab window! How did you and Andy enjoy the GATS today? Tell us about it! Take any photos?
