In re-designing the INDIANA RAILWAY, I have a build question. The room is paneled and finished. Planning on placing 2 x 4's around the room on 16" stud centers. The 2 x 4's will be attached to the paneling/walls. Want to use Masonite attached to the 2 x 4 studs on the paneled wall. This way the Masonite panels are held up by the 2 x 4 studs, and are NOT attached directly to paneled walls.

QUESTION: What thickness of Masonite would best to be used? 1/8" or 1/4" Tempered or Non Tempered Masonite?

4' x 8' sheets are cheap enough and I can cut them (outside the basement) myself. Attach with short drywall screws, and cove corners. Edges/joints can smoothed out with drywall mud.

The 1/8 inch Masonite will be good, it will let you curve the panels when you wet them with water. The 1/4 inch Masonite would be a lot tougher to work with.

Agree with Joe here on the 1/8th inch Masonite being better. If I remember correctly, I read on another forum that wetting with Windex works even better than water for curving Masonite. Would be worth looking into at least.

Eighth inch should hang straight, and will be enough lighter than quarter inch that you can use smaller or fewer screws.
