Not that difficult, although I would suggest doing a couple of non-sound wired decoder installations first. Or, there are some here who will do the install for you.
Years ago i bought a bunch of LL locomotives, less expensive, and they ALL run great. Not all of us can afford DCC I'll run DC til i die. I kike DCC, just can't afford it. Helped a friend set up his DCC layout and and loved it.
That's basically what LionChief Ready to Run and the like are. Doesn't matter the protocol, radio signals controlling a receiver in the train instead of using the tracks and whatever method is used to distinguish engines. Lionel has the "universal" handheld controller that lets you program it for 3 different trains.
