Thanks for the update Paul, nice to see Atlas leading with a DCC switcher with sound no less. I'll be contacting my shop and ordering a couple undecs.
Now that our guys are back stateside and brought the sample back with them, here is a little bit better video
I don't know about the horn, sounds more like an electronic buzzer to me, but the rest sounds ok. The illuminated number boards are a nice touch.
Paul Building an S-2 loco as the first Atlas N scale sound offering is a bold move, but speaks loudly to those of us who anticipate more future sound offerings by Atlas. Please keep up the good work I look forward to a very sound future. Kudos to you and the crew at Atlas. Very cool!!!
I am certainly intrigued by the model... particularly that such a small model can be fitted with a sound system. While I agree the horn sound is 'buzzy'... the other sounds are pretty good. I also commend those at Atlas responsible for bringing sound to such a small model platform. The problems I see with the technology is that the cost is prohibitive for a large segment of the model railroading market. I would imagine that the sales of the NON-DCC/Sound models will be far greater than the actual sound equipped models.
The horn actually sounds like a Wabco A2, which is what most S2s were equipped with. Go check one of the online diesel horn sound sites if you don't believe me.
I was trying to compare it to this sound file on the SoundTraxx website. I feel the sound should have a more deep 'muffled' bass sound: http://www.soundtraxx.com/dsd/tsunami/playsound.php?s=wa2
Still think the horn on the model sounds like a line from a movie..." Hold on...I'll buzz you in. " BZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzztt !!!!
The soundtraxx file sounds muffled, like it was recorded from inside the cab. You can find several good Wabco A-2 sounds here: http://atsf.railfan.net/airhorns/a2.html
Maybe I need to get my ears cleaned out but the Atlas horn doesn't sound like any of those. It might sound better in person.
Thanks Westfalen... I didn't want to be the first one to say that. Perhaps if we consider that the size of the speaker and the confines of the metal body may be slightly altering the sound a bit... we can accept this to be as close as we can get to a Wabco A2. I mean... it is still buzzy sounding like George mused... but at least it wasn't 'ding-dong' or something ridiculous sounding.
I going to guess it's your computer speaker that is making it sound like a buzzer, because what I'm hearing sounds pretty close.
The sounds from the websites are very good... that is what I'm comparing to the Atlas video... which has a buzzer-like sounding S2 horn. Sent from my ALCATEL ONE TOUCH Fierce using Tapatalk
To defend most model manufacturers... it is difficult to get a small electronic device with a minute speaker to sound just like a full sized prototypical device's mechanical sound. Most sound equipped n scale models have similar sound distortion. Sent from my ALCATEL ONE TOUCH Fierce using Tapatalk
I have to agree.... There are many variables to consider. The abilty of the small speaker in the model. The playback abilities of the decoder itself. The recording abilities of the video camera. The playback abilities of everyones computers or cell phones. I use headphones OR good computer speakers OR I run the computer audio through my Sony STR-SE501 100W Amp. Comparing the audio on the video...played thru any audio playback devices I have...to the real horns listed through links...the model still sounds like a door buzzer. Its my opinion and I stand by it I suppose the only thing that really matters is how it sounds when you are standing there right in front of the model.
You sure have a right to your own opinion. I have hear lots of door buzzers in my 64 years and have never heard one sound like that!
