    Bob,

Many years ago, I had to remotor a RR 2-8-8-2 after I dropped it and broke one of the magnets loose inside the motor casing. IIRC, only one small screw at the bottom holds the motor in place. I replaced the original motor with a 12-20 Sagami mounted in silicon. I believe Kaplon tape would work fine. The original motor was a pretty tight fit, and contacted the frame in a number of locations, including the front. I couldn't find a replacement motor, so went with the Sagami. I did not have to touch the rest of the mechanism, and there is a groove in the frame for running wires to the headlight. I believe the lamp is at the front of the boiler, with a fiber optic cable connected to the headlight on the pilot.

Thanks Pete. Now I can work on the four RR 2-8-8-2's that I have. I just wanted an easy way to isolate the motor without taking the whole loco apart.

    Bob,

Once you remove the cab backplate, the shell lifts off from the rear. Then you slide it slightly forward, and it just lifts off. There are locating nubs on the frame, and corresponding indents on the shell, at the firebox, so you need to spread the bottom a little. There may be a screw holding it down--I don't remember after 30 years, and mine's packed away right now. The screw may have been in the smokestack.

Thanks Pete. I've had the shell off a number of times but didn't attempt to remove the motor. I'll look for the screw holding the motor in place some time tomorrow. Then I'll insulate the frame from the motor with some Kapton tape.

An actual communication from Athearn in their Feb. 16 newsletter: "The N Scale 4-6-6-4 Challengers are due to arrive here next week (the week of February 19). We'll send them out as soon as they arrive, and we expect them to be in stores early March."

    Good news!!!

The Rivarossi and 2 MRC/ROWA 2-8-8-2s I have has a U shaped wire clip holding the motor in place. No screws.

    Yahoooo!!!!

Wow, earlier than thought! Still late, but I'll wait if the engine's gonna look right, run right, and is reliable.

Thanks Al. My RR 2-8-8-2's have no screws, but have the wire clip holding the motor in place.
