Tracks cleared after derailment Cause of accident under investigation Monday, July 9, 2007 By SUSAN KAUFMAN The Register-Mail APPLETON - Two railroad tracks are back in service after a train derailment near Appleton Saturday afternoon. A westbound Union Pacific train derailed about 4 p.m. Saturday, about one-half mile east of Knox Highway 12. Union Pacific spokesman James Barnes said there was confusion about whether or not the train was a Union Pacific train due to the tracks being owned by BNSF Railway. Barnes said 14 rail cars carrying more than 100 containers derailed. The containers held various commodities but no hazardous materials. Rail traffic was closed on track 2 until 5 p.m. Sunday. Track 1 was re-opened at 12:35 a.m. today. The engine cars were not part of the derailment and were uncoupled and moved shortly after the incident. No injuries were reported in the accident. The train originated from Chicago and was destined for California. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
