I guess the title says it all...what the heck is goin on up there in G. town and what are the prospects for this summer?
Regular summer season open daily May 23 - October 12, 2009! Now what engine will be working is another story... This is what was happening in June 2008 [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_TN10-oUFU"]YouTube - Georgetown Loop Railroad 2008 Part 1 of 3[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lu2Wgs-FGw"]YouTube - Georgetown Loop Railroad 2008 Part 2 of 3[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oia71GyE258"]YouTube - Georgetown Loop Railroad 2008 Part 3 of 3[/ame]
Glad they are running, but I hope it is not the diesel...sort of takes away from the "historic" railroad part...I miss the shays and never had a chance to see No. 9 in action!
#9 in action Yes, #9 has moved on; but, they are to get another steam engine in it's place. All we can hope is that steam once again will operate over the loop as it once did... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9kA5c_S5uI"]YouTube - Georgetown Loop Railroad #22[/ame]
Will they have steam for this season? If not, I worry that lacking the draw, it will hurt them. Which would not be good at this point in time. Boxcab E50
Actually, 2008 was an improved year because they didn't keep shutting down from the lack of an operational engine. With #21 doing all the work in 2008 they kept the schedule going all season and that brought badly needed tourist to Georgetown. As for #9, it is going to head to Breckenridge with a hope at the time to be slightly operational but that is fading. Breckenridge had Central America 2-8-0 #111 sitting on display at the Rotary Snowplow Park that has headed for restoration in hope to run on the loop. #9 once operated in Breckenridge as part of the Denver to Leadville from 1884 to 1937 so it's part of their history too. My family and I had the pleasure of running behind # 9 when she was in service. Here are a few still images for old times sake. Ben
I had read in the local paper a couple of months ago that the FRA was going to be doing some oversight of the operation due to some safety issues. With this economy, I really doubt they will have much business this year. I hope they can hang in there. It could be a really good draw for visitors to Denver. They actually had quite a bit of business during the DNC when it was in Denver. Eric
My little boy just saw the videos in this thread and informed me that we ARE riding it this summer, no matter what I had the good fortune to take my older son's on it when the shays were still in service. Might be nice to revisit it now.
