And then there was the one that just said "Serves the Southwest Well" until someone asked where the southwest well was. Oil or water?

    Pssssssssssst.........wanna buy this book?????

Sorry I haven't added anything to this particular forum lately, but this bit of news oughta interest you.

From the MKT group at Yahoo:
Miss Katy in the Lone Star State

Attention all fans of the MKT Railroad:

I am happy to announce that my eighth book, "Miss Katy in the Lone Star State-volume one" (The Good Old Days 1942-1960) book has been completed, proofed, and is awaiting printing. Expected publication date is mid-September. This hardback book will feature over 300 extremely rare "all color" photos of the Katy's operations in Texas between 1942 and 1960.

The book features both steam and early diesel. Since the book only makes it to 1960, almost 95% of the diesels featured are wearing their classy original MKT paint scheme. Steam includes: 0-6-0, 2-6-0, 2-8-2 and 4-6-2 wheel arrangements while first generation diesels include: E7, E8, PA-1, PA-2, FP7, F3, FA-1, RS-3, GP7, FM H16-44, GE 70 ton, NW2, SW9, DS-4-4-1000, and AS-16.

Passenger trains are well very represented with coverage of the TEXAS SPECIAL, BLUEBONNET, KATY FLYER, HOUSTON BLUEBONNET and Trains #31 and 32 (later renumbered #11 & 12) to Wichita Falls. A large number of photos are devoted to the Katy's RDC-3 including a never seen before color photo of the car's interior.

For those who model Katy passenger equipment, this book is thoroughly loaded throughout with all types of passenger cars. Separate chapters include the original 1947-1948 streamlined equipment (including all 14 cars), the additional heavyweight cars added in 1948, and ends with another two dozen photos including
everything from the Darby cars, to all types of heavyweight mail storage, express cars, chair cars, diners, the new TEXAS SPECIAL replacements, and the line's beautiful fleet of business cars.

All lines in Texas are featured including rare 1940's and 1950's action on the Mineola, Belton and Tin Can Subs. In San Antonio you will see how the TEXAS SPECIAL was cleaned and serviced each day (all in color!) and Houston fans should be thoroughly blown away by the amount of coverage in the state's largest city, including passenger operations. Other high points include separate chapters on Austin, Waco, Wichita Falls and the high point of the book are a large number of never seen before color images shot at Waco and Temple in 1951. As with my past books, I always include a separate chapter featuring depots (in order of their milepost) and I am happy to announce that the Katy book features 70 Texas depots, most of which are now gone.

The listed retail price for the book is $59.95. However, if you order the book direct from me before September 1st you can get a "signed copy" for only $46.00. Texas residents MUST ADD 8.25% state sales tax ($3.80). Shipping is $4.50 (Priority Mail) and for those wishing to add insurance, please include $1.35.

All copies purchased direct from the author will be signed copies and can be personalized and dated such as "To Robert, best wishes and happy railroading!" (for example) upon request with your order. The books are expected to arrive sometime in September and will be shipped out in the order that they were purchased. Any updates on the arrival of the books will be announced as I receive them.

Please note that I DO NOT accept credit cards. Checks and money orders only. Send orders to:

I went to Trafford, AL last Sunday (July 23,2006) mainly to see if I could find some old section hand housing on the old L&N (Nashville to Bhm, now CSX))that an aquaintance of mine lived in some 40 yrs ago. Whilist there a northbound manifest went by and to my surprise there was a green MKT cement hopper, the short type. Also had painted reporting marks of a leasing co, too fast for me to get them down, something like LERX or similiar. Made my day since I grew up on the Katy in McAlester, OK. Another Katy Fan

I grew up in Greenville, and fondly remember the passenger trains, cabooses in red, and later in green/yellow. I also remember KCS pulling in with F-units and GP30's in red and white. If anyone wants to know rememberances or track layout of Greenville, I'm the one to contact.

Not much in the way of Katy here in Jawjuh.....just lots of CofG, SAL/SCL/CSX, Southern, and various shortlines. Haven't even seen a MKT-sublettered car out this-a-way.

Can't wait to get back to Tejas.............

Greetings, this is the first time I have posted to this forum so please bear with me. I noticed in one of the posts above that the Mineola sub was mentioned. I would like to find out more about this sub if possible.

Some of the first Atlantic types, one of the first two railroads in Indian Territory, boring USRA locomotives with that standout red crest on the tender and the whitewalls always freshly painted front to back, even when it was in bankruptcy, Chrysler Airflow and Lincoln Zephyr inspection cars, incredibly tidy stations with the rocks painted white, repowered ALCOs with two cycle EMD engines, and always but always the finest in Southwestern hospitality on the passenger trains even as they swayed and bumped over deteriorating, weed-choked trackage...

If you don't love the Katy, you just don't know the Katy yet.

Sadly, this is the Katy that I remember.

However, I get to model it in its glory days.

Well, I'm not sure it had any glory days. Even your very handsome Texas Special is more Frisco than Katy. I suspect that it's a good thing the Santa Fe hated joint passenger operations with a passion (Santa Fe All The Way, you know) or the Frisco would have jilted the Katy in a second and run the train through Ft. Smith and over the GCSF from Paris, TX.

But, glorious or not, there's plenty in the tale to love. Indeed, sometimes those who never achieve glory are the most loveable.

    M-K-T?? Heck, yes!!!
I run several GP & SD MKT locos (all grasshopper colors) on my Nebraska Westward Railroad in HO. I mainly have BN, ATSF, UP and also whatever runs (err-----ran) on Nebraska railroads and on westward.

This is my first post, so that's why I never posted here before now.

Russ- yeah, I remember those rustbuckets Katy got from the ICG- made the black ex-Conrail GP40s look good.

I gave my KAty pics to Ray Hamm to scan & upload to George Elwood's Fallen Flags site, so hopefully you'll find some green & yellow (and yes, even one Katy red switcher!) for you to look at.

Welcome to Trainboard! Seeing as how Katy had trackage rights to Omaha for a few years, you sure could include some Katy units. A nice relief from the OD of Armour Yellow & Harbor Mist Gray normally seen in the Cornhusker State.

Where I was born (Beatrice, NE), CB&Q, UP and CRI&P ran thru town. Mom was born down in Wymore, a former Q railroad city (now, sadly, without any tracks at all).

Good to hear from you, Frisco Bob.
    Wymore Line, huh?
It's still there---Used as storage track mostly.
Well, I grew up on the other "end" of it in Table Rock. And I live there again.
It runs through my sister's place.
I get nice KCS loco & coal car pix from my gunshop balcony that's only 300 yds away.

Right now I'm deployed. And I sure miss seeing trains. Afghanistan is virtually rail-less.

Here's one of the short hoppers I caught in Chickasha along the Rock Island main line. Getting close to the leased Choctaw sub from Holdenville to McAlester!
