I hope all you Americans have relised what a good thing Amtrak is! They may run late, have some technical problems, but they have very cheap transportation! I could get from Bellighamm, WA to Portland, OR for about $65 USC Round trip! If Via was running that route I am sure it would be about $150 CDC (75 USC). Not only is that cheap but the equipemnt on that run is very nice, its those almost brand new shiny, fast, and good looking Talgo trainsets! Some of the long distance trains may cost more..I didn't check but for the distance between those two locations that isn't half bad! I am suprised more people don't take advantage of that system! I would sure hate to see it leave in 2003...although I doubt it will!

    Happy Railroading!

It's 265 miles according to maps.yahoo.com. No offense to Amtrak, but Southern California's Metrolink trains are an even better bargain. You can go on a 150 mile ride, from Oceanside to Montalvo for $37.00 round trip! (Plus they're almost always on time)

Doubt very much if anyone can go round trip O'side to Oxnard as Metrolink mostly goes to LA in AM & from LA in PM, especially from Oxnard. Also you have to use Metrolink R/T tickets on day of purchase, not split like you can W/ Amtrak. Also you would be changing trains in LA unlike W/ Amtrak. Amtraks fare is $24 (summer time rate) oneway & there are 4 trains/day each way.

I've used Amtrak many times. I've gone from Toledo to Harrisburg for $100 round trip and from Toledo to Cleveland twice for $32 round trip. Hope to take a trip later this summer from Toledo to Harrisburg, back to Chicago, then home to Toledo.
