I'm taking the California Zephyr from SF to Omaha in two days and would like to follow the train on Google Earth. I've searched everything I could think of to find a route or path for the CZ in Google Earth but nothing. Does anyone know of or have one they are willing to share? The idea is to add place markers to various spots throughout the trip where I'll be taking pictures/video.
Railroad Adventures (RRAdventures) - SILVER Anniversary If you review my "Railroad Adventures (RRAdventures) - SILVER Anniversary" topic there is a ton of AMTRAK info between Emeryville, CA and Denver, CO. :tb-biggrin: :tb-biggrin: :tb-biggrin: :tb-biggrin:
Yes,that looks like it will help a lot! Thanks Darren. I've browsed through your RRAdventures a few times in the past. I'll definetly give it a good read tonight and I'll probably end up playing where's waldo on the train trying to spot all the places you've captured. As a fail safe, do you also have a map of the re-route through Wyoming? It looks like my train is supposed to take the normal route as of now, but you never know.
Don't know the "Alternate" route for sure; but, I would assume this would be it... :tb-nerd: :tb-nerd: :tb-nerd: :tb-nerd:
Wow, that KMZ file is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you!! Hmm.. Google Earth requires an internet connection to work though doesn't it? Is there a way to cache the images along the CZ route for offline use? I don't suppose Amtrak has free wifi on board does it?
Not that I am aware of; but, you can save JPG files off like the two I attached... You will also find this site of interest: http://www.daeunert.com/Colorado/html/mile_by_mile.html It covers SLC to DEN in detail. We took a printout of that site with us. My video clips use that site's information heavily in that section of the route. These books are also useful... It's a set of three, the third in the series covers DEN to Chicago. The SPV books I got at my LHS and they are very useful for Railfans too.
