Kato has never produced a 'War Baby'.

But they canceled the “Southern Pacific large lettering” on the tender as opposed to the smaller “Lines” lettering. Seems like such a small thing since it's just printing instead of molding, but what do I know?

I agree with you. I hate the fact that I have to make strategic purchasing choices due to limited runs. Placing reservations is "rolling the dice" and hoping nothing better comes out around the same time. I have a Hiawatha on reserve so I'm hoping (and pretty sure) an SP MT2 thru 5 with skyline casing doesn't come out (you get my point).

    Nice video BTW!

I have one. "War Baby" is slang for the black GS4 used during WWII.

What's your source for that information?

'War Baby' is slang for the smaller GS-6's (not GS-4's) that were made in 1943. War Babies have no skirts.

    Jason,

You are correct! The GS-6's were essentially GS-3's with an enclosed cab and the newer GS-4 tender. The WP received a few of the GS-6's. SP had to convince the War Board to release the order. A story I had heard/read was that SP told them GS stood for General Service. Not Golden State. Just what I had read somewhere.

    Have a good one,

That's not a release, it's a rude noise in public. :mtongue:I meant PRODUCE them, not just make one a decade.

I soldered a Tsunami 750 programmed with AC-12 sounds last night to a plug and to a speaker. I might have gotten a little ahead of myself on the speaker size as I cannot now find a way to close the tender.

I think I am going to cut back on the weight a little, since the speaker makes up for the missing weight, and mount the speaker a little lower, so that I can fully close the tender again.

Hmmm, according to Robert J. Church in his book "4-8-4's Daylight The Complete Story of the Southern Pacific GS Class 4400 Series Locomotives" in chapter 9 he writes about GS-6 The War Babies. My bad! Ya learn something new every day. It is interesting how many mfg's call the black GS-4's War Babies. There were GS-4's that were painted black (4449) and stripped of their skirts (4430) during WWII.

Kato has released two black War Babies, #4438 and # 4431. They had plans to do four, but two numbers were canceled.

OMG, really. Could you not read to three posts above?

No they haven't. War Babies were GS-6's not the GS-4's that Kato makes. War Babies were numbered 4460-4469, War Babies didn't have skirts. War Babies were smaller than the GS-4 with smaller drivers.

    Etc, etc, etc.

'War Time Black' and 'War Babies' are not the same thing. No matter how much you want them to be.

Ok let's take it easy here. The definition of a slang term is hardly worth getting short of breath. Some see it more specific, others see it broad. Guess what? We're all correct, because it's slang! :)

Adam, I'm jealous that you have sound already. I hope you'll do us the honor of showing a few pics. :)

Once I work out the installation so that the tender closes completely again I will post some pictures.

Does anyone know what the whistle on AC-12 #4275 sounded like? I have about 5 or 6 whistle styles on this decoder.

I'm not sure if audio in this clip is original, but at 3:39 the whistle blows.

Some great sound overall in the clip, but what are those little "spew" sounds coming from?

Ran my AC-12 tonight, it doesn't like my super-elevated curves. it seems to spin out. I'm guess I'm going to have to do some fiddling. Luckily, it matches perfectly with my key units as far as speed. Pics to follow.

Great video! At some point down the road, I will invest in a Tsunami and speaker, but such purchases must be spread out to avoid entanglements with the boss.

I believe the "spew" sounds are from the air compressor.

That is one of the distinctive AC sounds. It is steam exhaust from the two air pumps on the back of the smoke box. The exhaust vented to atmosphere instead of into the smoke stack, thus it is heard very clearly instead of being muffled and masked inside the smokebox. I do not think any of the sound in this film was recorded contemporaneously in 1957 with the camera shots. It is not well synched and is pretty clearly dubbed after the fact. I do not have my copy of the DVD in front of me, but I think I recall that the original was 8mm film with no sound. That would raise a question regarding the source of the soundtrack used.

What speaker(s) did you try? With an enclosure or without?

I grabbed the biggest Soundtraxx speaker that looked like it would fit. It's made by Soundtraxx. I just laid it flat on that little board or whatever that the socket sits on. I was thinking I might be able to clip off part of that board and then make a proper enclosure for the speaker. That will give me the millimeter or so I need AND help focus the sound.

There are holes in the bottom of the tender, in anticipation of a speaker.

When I figure it out I will post pictures.
