Hey guys, I just got to wondering.... I heard CSX made an order with EMD for SD-70's in part to the closing of the EMD shops of General Motors. As to keep the locomotive race between EMD an GE down so that one company wouldn't prevail.

But in wondering I got to looking... I noticed something on a few of UP's SD-70's....

Is their a chance that CSX's order of SD-70's will have the winged radiators???? As to the SD-70's CSX already has, are flush mounted radiators... Being they look like a "lil Brother" to the SD-80's an SD-90's "Big Brothers" with the big winged radiators. Be nice to see what a SD-70 like the one pictured would look like un CSX.. just not in the "Dark Future" YN3 but in the "Bright Future" YN2 sceme, but I know the new order of these loco's will be in the Dark Future YN3 sceme, but we all can dream can't we??? :D

But anyway, anyone know if the new order of SD-70's that CSX ordered if they will have the winged radiators or the flush mounted radiators???? TIA for any knowledge....

Hey, I think that Picture is from the Vancouver Washington Station.
    Cool.

Anyway, any new SD-70s will have the flared radiators. Its got to do with EPA regulations.

This will be interesting seeing CSX with the flared radiators!!!!! I like how the SD-80MAC's looked in the bright future, to bad the new SD-70's wouldn't be painted in the bright future sceme! :(

But the "Dark Future" sceme is growing on me! :D

haven't been here in a longm while........Yeah, the Dark Future scheme is basically ripped from the past. The C&O had it. What's next? B&O Sunburst? [IMG]

When did CSX make the order? EMD just announced a new line of AC traction 70s called SD70ACe. They have the newer style cab and look like SD9043/80s.

I'm not sure when the order of 70's went in for CSX.. I was wondering that myself! But The flared radiators ought to look good! :D As I love the radiator flaring on the 80MAC's!

The CSX order is for 75 SD70MAC locomotives which are to be numbered 4701-4775. At last report, these locomotives will not have flared radiators due to the fact that the SD70MAC carbody is longer, providing sufficient extra space for the larger radiators required to meet EPA Tier 1 requirements.

Last I heard (just the other day) was that the SD70ACe is what CSX is actually getting. It kinda looks like a cross between the SD80 and the new UP SD70Ms with the modified cab - a little different than the 90MAC-II.

There is a pic on TO here for those who have an account. I would throw it up on Railimages, but it's not up anymore.

It be something to see just one of those in Bright Future.. but I know I know, they're all going to be in Dark Future paint. :( But I can dream can't I ????

The information I posted earlier is correct. The new CSX order is for the proven SD70MAC units and not the new SD70ACE model that has just been released for testing.

Ratz! That would have been something to see in CSX! I wonder if they will buy any of the 70AC-E in time.. Interesting thought....

The one thing I can say about the flared SD70Ms is that they've helped me get over the loss of the SD45. Two SD70Ms on a northbound UP freight (both flared) make me flash back to images of two SD45s haulin booty with a Frisco freight.

Wonder if Athearn is gonna come up with flared SD70s, or have they done so already?

    yoho,
It sure would have been different to see that painted in CSX! I thought thats what CSX had ordered from EMD, the SD-70AC-E's....

Almost like having a 90MAC on the CSX roster! With those looks.. for some odd reason I like the way the SD-70AC-E, SD-80MAC, and SD-90MAC's all look. I like the flaired radiators, an the the wide cab an then the way EMD done that nose on the SD-70AC-E, plus on the (I think) 90MAC-H units.... I'm not to familar with the SD-9043MAC, an the SD-90MAC-H units... Just what is the difference to them ???? As did EMD ever get to make a real SD-90MAC.. like the SD-80MAC??? Not body style wise but power an performance. I'm kinda lost with the 90's....

I don't know what it was about the SD-50's, 60's, and early 70's... but that "sleek" look didn't appeal to me. But I love this "winged" radiator, and wide cab.. mean look, like "tear 'em up, rip 'em apart" jump out an bite ya for looking the wrong way at them! :D Thats the look of the new SD-70AC-E, SD-80MAC, an the SD-90MAC's.... I love the bulkyness look of it, with the flaired radiators an all....

The news that I heard was that CSX is getting 70macs, not SD70's or the SD70ACe. I am not sure if they will get the flared radiator's or not.

One promising thing is that if EMD is marketing the SD70ACe then they still intend to stay in the diesel market. That is good news for the people hate the Garbage Engines. It might be bad news for shop forces as there will be less chance for Guaranteed Employment.

I don't know about you guys, but it seems to me the Dark Future scheme is not weathering as well as the old Bright Future scheme. I saw couple of ratty looking dark future units the other day. I don't think the wear would have been as noticeable as on the bright future units. But that is just my opinion.
