Has anyone seen any 86' Auto Parts box cars recently either painted for or sublettered for CSX? Were they 4 or 8 door? I recently picked up a bunch of the ConCor [N] 86' cars for a good price and was thinking about sending them to the paint shop... [IMG]

Hey guys - I've been away for a while - pretty busy lately, just moved to Colorado. But hopefully I can get caught up with all the action on the board.

CSX has a bunch of both 4- and 8-door 86' cars. Most have been repainted in full CSX blue, but you can still find a few with Chessie cats. I've bought a bunch of photos at shows for 4-door cars - the 8-door cars are harder to find. I haven't managed to catch any myself, so I can't really post the photos I have, since they don't really "belong" to me. But here's a couple URLs for 4-door cars:

    http://www.csxfan.railfan.net/freightcars/csxbox/csxt179195.html

    http://www.csxfan.railfan.net/freightcars/csxbox/csxt180261.html

And one with the good ol' Cat:

I sent a couple scans to Athearn a year or so ago and got them to do their HO 4-door model in CSX - they had released the 8-door initially, which I thought was strange since those are more rare. But it was pretty exciting to see them use the photo I sent when they announced the 4-door on their web site. Walthers also offers the Pullman Standard version in HO.

(Hope I did the HTML correctly)

Those are great looking cars - anyone know who built them? I'd love to see Athearn produce those in HO, but I don't know if they match any of the 60-foot versions that Athearn is offering in their Genesis line.

It strikes me that modern boxcars are pretty straightforward in design - you could probably scratchbuild one of these in any scale with sheet and strip styrene, if you had good drawings or measurements and an appropriate door.

Although slightly off topic, I don't mind adding what little I know.... LBF Models bought and took over the old E&C; although I model N scale, I was excited to see someone had bought their molds. Yes, the HO models of the "Big Blue" cars are available, but they are only 50' cars. Here's a picture: http://www.lbfcompany.com/images/1304n.jpg

As far as HO modeling, didn't Roundhouse/MDC offer 50' hi cubes in HO like they did in N scale? If not, take heart... I have seen the "new" LBF cars offered on eBay for way below retail (~40% off)

The E&C model had some problems - I wasn't very fond of the shallow exterior post details, and the overall appearance in general, plus apparently the roof was wrong, so I passed on that model. Fortunately, Walthers should be releasing their HO version of this prototype any day now, which looks to be much better. There are a couple variations of this car, but fortunately for us, they're doing the one that fits the CSX Big Blue cars, with the wide post of the trucks.

Here's a picture of the Wisconsin Central version of the model:

    I can't wait!
