I hit a link that Powersteamguy posted re: Bachmann 2-6-6-2 for Tony's Trains. I noticed a $5 surcharge for UP and another line on its locomotive prices. Has anyone else seen this from other retailers? Wholesalers?
I imagine it was for the use of the logo. The other was DRG & something or other. I assume these are the royalties being passed right on down the food chain.
Sadly, that's the result of the deal/rape/extortion number UP forced on the manufacturers. IIRC, CSX also has a trademark deal, but I'm not sure of the monetary value per unit (as in UP's case, where it's supposed to be 5 bucks per $100)
Mark: I've seen that on many sites. Many times there is just a $5.00 increase in the price without any notification. This goes for all the roads that UP merged with as well. It's for the use of the UP logo. Stay cool and run steam.....
Guys, Have a look to the N-Scale mag of nov-déc 2004. everything is well explaind... and UP is doing a real nice extortion! seb
I keep urging folks to go this route. Until the engine manufacturers, such as EMD, decide to follow the Omahahahaha example, and add a surcharge for your new SD45 model.... Boxcab E50
Model freelance/homelance steam! Better yet...I should start finding out who owns the rights to the steam locomotive designs, I could earns millions licensing the likeliness of them!!!
If I didn't need UP diesels and a caboose to simulate UP runthroughs on the Frisco, I'd avoid 'em like the plague. As it is, I have just enough motive power to do this job, and I've pretty well stopped at the limit of UP rolling stock. Only fallen flag stuff I need is from MoPac and Katy.
One question to ask yourself: Why is a railroad who, in ten years' time, has suffered traffic meltdowns 3 times due to wrongheaded corporate decisions, Bottom Line disease, and outright arrogance worrying about extorting money from modeling manufacturers and we the modeling public? Am I the only one who sees a misplacement of priorities here?????
Bob- Nobody could talk Captain Smith out of his course. The most experienced master they had. He even wanted some life boats removed. As they'd never be needed. My point? He stubbornly sailed the Titanic smack into an iceberg. And it DID sink. Which is my impression of the helm at Omahahaha. Boxcab E50
Come now people, must we be so harsh? The UP is doing what it feels is right. Try putting yourself in their shoes. And remember there are UP lovers here too.
