Hi All, I'm Erik, I live in the Netherlands. I used to have an N scale layout, but some 10 years ago I had to pack it all up to make room for other things. Around christmas I decided to pick up the old hobby again and I started a small shelf layout. The layout features a large yard for storing all my equipment. The yard currently has a maintenance facility and some space for my infrastructure contractor. I'm a civil engineer and you can't build a bigger railroad without a contractor, can you...? While building the layout I came across 3D printing. I found that I was able to make a lot of things in 3D I was looking for but couldn't find. Building 3D models became as much a hobby as building up the layout. Sometimes I see stuff on my drive to/from work and I decide to model it when I get home, and so a collection built up. After some encouragement I decided to make the models available via my shop at Shapeways. Some stuff I made: My tank farm, with IBC's and 55 gallon drums My recently finished prototype for concrete ties, in the background my cable reels, diesel generator and in the far back my train maintenance platform. As you can see I run both US and European equipment, just because I can.
Welcome aboard Erik. I spent a good deal of time last week hanging out with two brothers from the Netherlands at the N scale Convention in Sacramento, California.
Hi Erik, Welcome, and welcome back to the hobby. Being an engineer (retired) myself, I understand how you can be easily diverted by a new and fascinating technology. Your 3D products are well done, especially the tank farm.
Welcome aboard! It does seem a great trend to see folks like you taking advantage of the new technologies to create things you want and then making them available to others.
Thanks for the welcome! @Eagle2: I really think this trend will continue, I'm curious to how the established companies will change their way of doing business.
Welcome aboard, Erik. Interesting how the three-D stuff complements your N scale collection. Another engineer here.
