I am plotting how to get a shot of 3985 in the Columbia River gorge in a couple of weeks with Multnomah Falls in the background. Nearly impossible. Sun never on the falls, train headed the wrong way (eastbound), highway 84 in the way. Boat?

Do they still maintain those snow fences? If so, looks like they'd best get busy! Winter is a comin'!

Hey guys, the train was held up near Elko because of a big fire which crossed and took in the tracks. From what I can gather from other sites, the steam crew used the water in the aux tenders to help extinguish the fire. Let's hear it for what steam engines and their crews can do, vs. diseasels. Now they have to stop at the next fillup station to replenish the water supply. Way to go, Steve Lee and company!! Steam lives!! [IMG]

If there is any deferred maintenance on the UP property, it would be the snow fences. Originally built from wood, I've seen them in various conditions from fair to disintegrated. Newer ones, as built by WYODOT, are made of metal, and along the I-roads they're experienting with so-called "living snow fences"- trees & shrubs planted linear to serve as snow shields when they get bigger.

I have no idea if the fences are kept up by the railroad or individual landowners along the ROW.

Looks like that steam crew is always having to get the UP out of fix. Remeber when the 844 had to push that stalled freight the rest of the way to Cheyenne. :D

The steam team is surely good PR for Uncle Pete, no matter what it is, eh?
Kudos to Steve, Lynn, and the rest of the crew!

The 3985 went through Redding on Monday and I missed it because I was camping. :( I got back home, and looked in Saterday's paper it said the she was expected to through around noon and arrive in Dunsmuir around 3pm and layover there for the night and then continue on to Klamath Falls. I was totally caught off guard because I thought the 3985 was supposed to go through Portola up the "Inside Gateway" not through Redding. But going through the Feather River eventually means having to run on BNSF trackage the rest of the way to Klamath Falls. Oh well maybe it might come my way again on its way home.

I'm getting confused a bit here. I know that UP's main north south line runs from Roseville through Chico, but I thought that WP's connection with that line was in Marysville and that line ran up through Oroville and the Feather River Canyon. Is there another I line I don't know about that runs to Chico? [IMG] I'm not very familiar with the line south of Gerber. I don't stray too far from Shasta Division boundaries. [IMG]

Never mind I figured it out. I guess I should have checked the UP website for the route it was taking. I should pay a little more attention next time. [IMG]
