In the photo, looks like one unit is BNSF?

yep... not uncommon on cn lines... we get all kinds of power at my shop... up, bnsf, ns, csx, conrail... and we run what we have... they do the same down in the southern shops too...

    that is sad...

    Alan-

Now and then, these are caused by a failure that nobody can predict.

However, these days, there is not enough human interaction. Too much reliance upon computers. Which cannot substitute for human eyes on trains, or trackside.

The move is on to have one man crews. Which certainly will not reduce the numbers of such incidents.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that area, the Yazoo District, was dark (unsignalled) during the IC days, and may still be.

It is also possible that the CN dispatcher(s) had a heavier than normal traffic load. CSX was shut down along the Gulf Coast due to Hurricane Dennis, i.e. everything between Jacksonville, Birmingham, Mobile, and New Orleans. CN may have given CSX temporary trackage rights through the Yazoo, and adjacent Districts. Actually, last evening our local TV station reported the accident as involving CSX trains.

BTW, CSX runs all sorts of locos through this area, UP, BNSF, CN, NS, WC, CP (Darren, I even saw a D&H a few years back), so I wouldn't be surprised if they had been CSX trains.

Yes, but the same thing happened to two KCS trains June 28 in the same area, it says in the newspaper article. What ever it is, it is continuing. [IMG]

KCS runs East/West along Interstate-20 from Meridian to Vicksburg. Yesterday's accident was up in the Mississippi Delta region in CN/IC territory, about 50-70 miles north of the KCS route. There have been three or four rail accidents in west central Mississippi over the past few years, and as far as the media is concerned, they all involve the same railroad and location, due to the media's inability to decipher maps.... My heart goes out to the crew members families :(
If it is a dark area, that dispatcher is in hot water. He would've had to give out 2 sets of train orders(form D)

    Mike-

I agree. A dispatcher could have put out a lap order.

But would it be possible that one crew over-ran their authority? When they should have been waiting a meet?

No matter what the cause, it's a sad event.

The human factor means yes, it is possible a train moved into a location it was not supposed to. So the fault could lie with the dispatcher, one of the crew, or both. It is sad, but what can you do? Stay at home and hide?
