How does one dismantle a Genesis 2-8-2, great engine (except for the dumb green headlight) I want to put marker lights on the loco and have to thread the green wire into the boiler. Anyone know how to take it apart? I've written to Athern, but you know I may hear in a month.

Hey Chris, wanta borrow my band saw? The easiest way to get inside todays models, is an axe! The factory designs them under DFA specs. I worked under those specs the last few years before retirement, it was brutal! They wanted to prevent "Outside" or "Unauthorized" repairs. If you send a product in that has been electronically welded together, they have certain points we had to design into it that could be cut, broken, or snapped apart in such a way that that part is destroyed. Remember, a plastic injection molded part the size of your engine's boiler costs the factory about $2.80 each to produce and .07 to weld into place. The idea is to insure that you do not kit bash their engine, or improve it without them knowing about it. Most companies today probably will not sell you certain parts or assemblies at all; you must return the whole engine to them. They will replace the bad part, then weld a new boiler, or diesel cab on, and send it back. If you painted the one you sent in, don't expect to get it back. Almost all products today are made to sell, not repair. DFA stands for Designed For Assembly. It is another way of them determining if you violated the warranty, see? I am not sure if Athern does this, but probably, and I can not tell what companies actually do this, because we had to sign non-disclosure documents that are on record. Also, DFM specs, is Designed For Manufacture specifically robotic manufacture.

Probably, if they will let you take it apart, look for a screw down inside the stack. If not, then look for a screw on the bottom close to the front or rear. If you remove it, the boiler probably slips foreward or rearward to release some molded on hooks somewhere. Then be careful of wires, don't pull any loose until you mark where they go and can be certain you can re-attach them. Bachmann and Rivarossi have books that show an exploded view, but no instructions as to what steps to take. I don't know about Athern. I suspect the next specs. that will come out are DFABK (Designed for assembly by kids- in China)

Chris, here is a list of directions I once received from Athearn on dissassembling the 2-8-2.

Regarding removal of the boiler, here is how we do it.

    1. Take off the cab . . .

    a. lift the rear of the cab to release the two rear tabs (small screwdriver
carefully inserted at bottom rear of cab will help)

    b. insert screwdriver at front side of cab between bottom of cab and walkway
and carefully spread side of cab away from boiler to release small tabs
at front bottom of cab (much easier to do than to describe).

    c. lift cab straight up and off of boiler.

    2. Remove smokebox front and unplug two wires (use sharp tweezers to pull
    plugs straight down).

    3. Remove the boiler to pilot deck supports (we'll get the correct term
for future use) -- smokebox stays --

    4. Remove screw from bottom of frame that goes up into stack

    5. Insert screwdriver at rear of boiler above walkway and carefully pry
boiler rear upward. Do this on both sides to release the tabs that hook
the boiler to the walkway. -- I usually find it easier to do this if I remove the piping on either side of the boiler/firebox. --

    6. THIS IS THE TRICKY PART . . . after rear of boiler is released, lift
rear of boiler to clear the weight, then CAREFULLY slide the complete boiler
forward. May need to wiggle it as you slide it forward. Boiler comes
off, and you have the innards exposed.

    7. To take out motor and boiler weight, there are four screws to remove.
Two screws are at rear, with red and black wires attached. Two are on each
side near front of weight, above walkway, just behind centerline of axle of
first driver. Take out these four screws and motor/weight assembly comes out.

The most important thing is to remember to remove the smokebox front and unplug the headlight. Otherwise the connections will be ruined.

    Good luck, Tom

Sounds like the designer did his job well, see? Just be careful and have patience.
    Good luck. Lubricate before re-assembly?

    Watash,
what kind of lube do you suggest and where should I put it(knowing you [IMG], don't get funny). Children read this board.
