"Valley Springs Train Times" Scheduled For April 26th

Posted by: thepinetree on 01/06/2008 09:58 PM, Updated by: Kim_Hamilton on 01/07/2008 12:10 AM

Valley Springs, CA...It’s all aboard for Valley Springs Train Times, Saturday, April 26th. Centered at the revitalized Historic Valley Springs Train Depot at the intersection of Highways 12 and 26 in West Calaveras County, the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. event will feature music and other entertainment, historical presentations, an ice cream social, craft and other vendors, and many surprises. Railroad and history buffs from throughout the region are expected to join the community-wide festival. Everyone is invited to the free, public event...

Created by the nonprofit Society for the Preservation of West Calaveras History in conjunction with the Historic Valley Springs Train Depot and the Valley Springs Area Business Association, Valley Springs Train Times is the first-ever celebration of the area’s railroad history.

The narrow gauge San Joaquin & Sierra Nevada Railroad ran from Brack’s Landing west of Lodi and reached Valley Springs on April 25, 1885. The line was soon purchased by the Southern Pacific, went standard gauge in 1904 and, while regular passenger service ended in 1932, freight was still being hauled into 1983. While no trains or tracks remain, the 123-year-old Valley Springs depot is the only original station of the SJ&SNRR still standing. The building will be rededicated at Valley Springs Train Times.

For more information, including vendor reservations, please contact the SPWCH at PO Box 714, Burson, CA 95225, (209) 772-0336, westcalaverashistory@ourvalleysprings.com

The depot appears in fair condition. Privately owned?

I was thinking privately owned. Due to the way those vehicles are parked around it.

    Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 03/13/2008 11:25 PM, Updated by: Kim_Hamilton on 03/13/2008 11:25 PM

Valley Springs, CA...One hundred and twenty-three years and one day after the first train of the San Joaquin & Sierra Nevada Railroad pulled into Valley Springs, the town will celebrate that event with a rededication of its historic train depot, a huge model railroad layout, and more. The Valley Springs Train Times event at the intersection of Highways 12 and 26, on Saturday, April 26, 2008, free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., is sponsored by the Society for the Preservation of West Calaveras History (SPWCH), the Valley Springs Area Business Association and the Historic Valley Springs Train Depot....

    Event highlights will include:

--The Matuca Chapter 1849 of E Clampus Vitus will rededicate the State Historic Landmark at the depot and participate in the unveiling of a new “Valley Springs” sign that will be affixed to the building.

--The Sacramento Valley Division of the Toy Train Operating Society will display its major model railroad layout, 14 feet by 26 feet, which will be set up at Sheng Chi Kung Fu (139 Main St.). In addition, the group will bring a test track and invite anyone with a model railroad car of HO, O or standard gauge to run their car on that track.

--The Sacramento-based Recreational Railroad Coalition will display at least two of its “speeders,” classic railroad maintenance vehicles.

--Along with musical entertainment by acoustic folk singer-songwriter-guitarist Patricia Jackson, country rockers Never The Same, and folk rock’s The Train Gang, the Calaveras Gunfighters shoot-‘em-up theatrical group will perform.

--Well-known Calaveras County writer Glenn Wasson will read from his new book “Tales Mark Twain Would Have Loved To Steal,” including his poem “Saturday Night in Valley Springs.” Bill Renwick, the great-grandson of the stagedriver on Black Bart’s last hold-up, will read from his ancestor’s autobiography.

--The Ice Cream Depot will host an Olde Tyme Ice Cream Social from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., featuring ice cream specials and period music.

--Vendor booths will offer everything from framed historic photos and books to popular music CDs, vintage railroad artifacts and Train Times T-shirts to wooden train whistles and train engineer hats for children.

    Valley Springs Train Times

    Hi Guys,

Phil Weaver here of the SPWCH and owner of Sheng Chi Kung Fu of Valley Springs.

Yes the depot is privately owned by Mike and Leanne Jurek of Valley Springs. If I remember right they bought it about 10 years ago. We're hoping that this event will spur on the community to help develop its historical value. It would be great for our community.

We'll keep event info up to date at
“VALLEY SPRINGS TRAIN TIMESâ€￾ CELEBRATION SET FOR APRIL 26 | Our Valley Springs

Here's the building where the model train display will be.
