Anyone ever hike the area for the snowslide in 1910 which destroyed the passager trian of the GN. That portion was relocated I believe. Stampede Tunnel? Tough area to hike or access? Up Nason creek.
Stevens Pass, on the old Cascade Tunnel route. Wellington, WA was the site of the avalanche. I haven't explored it, but it's on the bucket list.
Can only get so far as one of the tunnels is unstable has been for decades. Washington has closed the entrance. But as Hemi stated Stevens pass not Stampede pass.
A good portion of the pre-present day tunnel has been converted into a hiking trail. Google Earth will show it for you, including a trail head/parking area near current day Scenic,WA.
Been there alot over the years, way back when it was just the woods, eerie place by yourself! The wind will pick up right when you walk into the snowsheds up there, like the spirits of the dead are talking to you. Amazing place to venture into. I highly reccomend both Martin Burwash's book "vis major", and Gary Krist's book "The White Cascade". Great books with an almost "put you there when it happened" feels.
Thanks for those recommendations Kurt. Both are available on the Kindle, so I picked one up and put the other on a wish list.
