I recently read a history of the development of the steam locomotive and it is amazing how much time, labor and money went into the design and building of locomotives that were, for all intents and purposes, complete failures.

It really wasn't until the mid-1930's that real science was applied to steam locomotive design and even then they got it wrong a lot of times.

The real sad part of this story is that right when Alco, Baldwin, Lima etc. was reaching the pinnacle of steam development, along came the diesel electric and made steam virtually obsolete overnight.
