About 6 years ago, before I was back into trains, my young son and I counted over 100 engines coupled together in the Fontana (Bloomington?) California yard. Could anyone tell us why would all those engines be consisted? They appeared to be full size diesels, not switching engines.
    Thanks!

Stored power. Not at all uncommon to see this on the Class One companies. Either leases are ending and they will be returned, or there's been a downturn in traffic. Coupled up just like freight cars as they may have come there in bunches, dead in consists. Makes it easier to switch them as needed, etc.

Thank you! It was a pretty impressive sight and we had been wondering.

I see this frequently in the Roseville yard in CA. The largest line I have seen was about 60 engines. It is really impressive to drive next to them and they seem to go on and on. I have seen long lines since the 60, but none that long for a couple of years.
