Has anyone ever had problems with the brass electrical strip that goes from the frame to the truck in the Atlas RS-3? Sometimes I have the electrical strip get stuck on the frame and it doesn't make contact with the truck electrical pickup. I was wondering if anyone has ever soldered a wire from the frame to the truck, sort of how many modelers do in HO scale to their Athearn blue box locos. I remember seeing an article from the 1970s where someone did this trick but I am wonderng if anyone has done this recently given the newer frames and trucks styles from Atlas. Don't get me wrong, I am in no way bad mouthing Atlas considering all of my locos are Atlas products. None of my Atlas Geeps have had this problem, maybe because they are made with one electrical strip per side rather like on the RS-3 locos witch have 2 electrical strips per side and which seem to have more play in them. Sometimes. I usually bend it downward more if need be, but sometimes is also gets hung up on the sides of the frame.
there are two ways you could fix the problem. bend the strips out a little away from the frame. or glue a thin piece of plastic under the sill so the strip can not ride hi.
I like that idea! I also thought about applying Goo to the where the strip fits into the frame. I think the problem can be on the strip on either the short or long hood.
You can bend them down to increase the pressure on the truck pickup, and out so they won't catch the frame. While you're in there, paint the visible parts of the pickups with Neolube to make them disappear.
