Call me crazy, but I like 4x8s. I often use Microsoft Paint to edit MR's project layouts and other 4x8 track plans into all sorts of combinations with different eras, locales, and themes. Does anyone have some favorite 4x8 (or similar sized) layouts that have been published or used as project railroads? Mine are: •The Omaha Road (MR 1/13) •The Virginian (MR 1/12) •The Salt Lake Route (MR 1/10) •Virginia & Southern (MR 3/16)
There was one Model Railroader did ages ago, (HO) and had a booklet about it. Wish I could recall the name. Something like "A Four By Eight That Grows"?
Heh! I like mine best. I wanted dual track main line with room to run as well as yard and switching, and the option to expand later. It's a lot of track and I plan to use lots of salad to obscure the pasta. http://www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?threads/minneapolis-louisville-southern-railroad.67739/
Hands down, I like the old Pigeon Creek and Thawvlle plan published in Model Railroader back around 1967. Fair scenic possibilities, good way freight operation, and an out-and-back track plan that provided a long mainline run for its size.
Yeah. That's it. The area where the track branches off to the left was occupied by a terminal on the original. Perhaps something backwoods like E.L Moore's terminal from his Elizabeth Valley or perhaps something busier like the addition from Olsen's Jerome and Southwestern would fill the bill. (When it comes to track planning, I can copy a lot better than I can invent.)
Yes. That's the layout they made into one of their softcover booklets. The layout that grows. I had a copy of that booklet, long ago. Might have been the first such they ever did?
