Athearn has announced production of the Tank Train which will be available in May, 2017. They are doing both the original and later versions and each will be available in 12 road numbers (4 different 3-packs). Athearn indicates that the early version was produced in 1977 and the later version was produced in 1982. Does anyone know if it would have been prototypical for both versions to be in the same train in 1982 and after?

Well it's about time Athearn got off their butts to produce something worthwhile.
I've got to start saving money now, otherwise I going to be pre-ordering a very short train :|

I am glad is out of my time frame. If not would have to buy a lot. One mail order site said regular price $84.98 their $67.98. A train of these cars would look great.

I know that site. I just pre-ordered three 3-packs. But I'm feeling that will not be a respectable Oil Can Train.
    I need more $$ :\

Does thinking of it as setting aside about $2 per day over the next 11 months ease any of the discomfort?

Me too, she will ask me "how many of those cars do you need"?
How can I answer that question when it's a Tank Train? I used to watch those run up to the refinery in Carson all the time.

    In my brain I'm thinking,
stock / $$$, whatever runs out first ;)

Those look really nice. I used to see those on Tehachapi before they made the pipeline.

I had thought about doing the train in HO but at fifty bucks per car. Just way too expensive to make a respectable train.
The real trains were seventy eight cars long.

Little rubber hoses connecting to the end valves of each car. I have the HO set and it appears the N scale set will feature the same setup.

Ok I have to ask this. Shouldn't we be getting etched metal detail parts on those cars?

Now let the saving begin LOL. I have to see what Dabbler is offering.

    Peace be with you,

    Arthur

I guess nobody knows if the two schemes ever ran together?

Good to see this car finally showing up in "N". It was the car we had on the drawing board when we sold deLuxe to Dave back in the day.

GATX changed underframe designs in 1981, and the new builds after that for the SP controlled trains were all the "spartan" scheme. For a short period of time, they did an all white billboard logo that was a bit smaller than the Orange/White version. If you model mid 1982 to somewhere around late 1985, you can run the "old" scheme with the "mid scheme? with the "new" all black scheme. The later in the period you model, the fewer and worse shape the orange and white logos would be in.

Personally can't wait for the Quaker State scheme, or one of the four different CH schemes. Should be a great car for Athearn, and profitable enough for them to continue N development.

One of many great previews at the National N Convention!
