Howdy all!!!. Well while home with the flu, I proceeded to decal my little covered hopper project. First things first. I received two Walthers PS-4427 3 bay covered hoppers from Kiz in a trade fer accumates. They came in Cargill and BN. I used Chameleon and 91% alcohol to strip them. I tell you what that Walthers paint is tough. I wanted to use Scalecoat 2 to see what kind of coverage it gives. I shot at around 30 psi with a fine needle and I think it came out good. Good enough to convince me to keep using SC products and let Floquil and Modelflex fall by the wayside. Paint does take a while to dry. I plan to expeiriment with oven drying on some cheap cars. The decal set I used was # 518 from Oddball decals. One thing I noticed that the ink on the decal rubs off easily, so I need to be more careful next time. I took me about hour and half to decal one side, I thought I got all the little stuff straight, but I saw some misalignment in the pic. Before After Well I have one more to do, so I am going to have a two car set. I also have decals for the colormark, and the set with the blue car panels. When I get some more PS-4427's I will do those. Adios , Wyatt
Great job, Wyatt!! How long did you soak the models in the Chameleon? And by how much did you dilute it? I plan to strip an Atlas Trainmaster with Chameleon, so I'm interested to learn what works best...
Hey SOO - that car looks "real" We are lucky in Phoenix. I just let them dry in the sun. Bakes the paint real nice, but you have to remember they are out there. It can bake them into a puddle, too. I suspect the same might be true indoors with an oven. Bob Woods
Remember: "Only the artist knows where all of the mistakes are". Besides as was observed in another thread weathering will take care of that. // I'll try to find the original quote.
Kiz, Thanx fer words!!! WC, I shot you a email explaining what I did. Thank you for the compliment. Bob, Once more thank you for the kind words. When I get it done, I will post it here first. LT, I know about the baking idea, I am a little leary. I know of a custom painter that does it and swears by it. I will give it a try. GreyDude, I know that we are more harsh on ourselves. I know where they are and I will fix that with some thing. Adios Fer now Wyatt
Nice work Wyatt, I see these cars all the time still on the NS is Virginia. They are patched, of course, but still common enough.
Lookin good! I have a question for ya, once you stripped it then painted it did you then add a gloss coat prior to the decals or was the white glossy enough? I can't wait to see the next. Joe
Very nice. Now pack them up carefully and send them my way. They'll look good on my grain train. thank you ever so much I agree with everyone else, even the flaws are only visible to the modeller. Nice job.
Thanx for all the replys guys!! Sandro, I know I need alot more, but being that walthers no longer makes the car , that is a little problem.LOL Balou, The lettering on alot of the hoppers was green. There is also a car with a section of panels painted green with the golden wheat sheaf in the green area. Like Precison Masters did a run of. Tony sir, I know it looks real clean, but it is a work in progress. So cut me some slack, lol Alex, Thank you for the comments. I have always liked your logo and paint jobs, very prfessional looking. N scale lover, I know they need dirt, give me some time,LOL Red, I am learning oh Obi Wan.LOL 1999, Thanx , I appricatte it. Foth, ( to long to type the rest)LOL, I get the flu in spring, so there SuperGoat, The paint I used was Scalecoat2 made for plastics. It comes glossy when dry. It is my first time using that. I like it, works great. I have tried decaling over flat paint, a no no as we all know. Big, Thank you. Geeky, Sorry my fleet has rights to all cars, better luck next time,LOL Well I am doing all of this on my GF's puter as mine took a large nose dive, from the deep end, Adios all, Wyatt
