Which brings us back to whether it is an aux fuel tender or a temporary hookup. Trying to figure why they would temporarily break up a loco consist to hook a tank car between them. That just seems like an odd maneuver IMHO.
Funny, I was just thinking about the BN fuel tenders the other day, and found that same site. I lived near the BN in Chicago and never saw these. I think we must have moved right before they started using them. Cool idea though.
Depends, BN didn't use them on the transcon trains very long. Most of the fuel tender lives were spent in helper sets in the coal fields of Wyoming or on Crawford Hill NE
I model steam so my first thought was about steam locomotives with second tenders. I know some steam locomotives were run with a water supply after water towers along the line were gone or no longer functioning.
