This is certainly an interesting possibility. If so, I'd sure like to know what the winner is thinking right now.
That is why you NEVER bid more than you are willing to actually pay. Back when the XBox first came out, someone listed the empty BOX for an XBox and two people got into a price war and one of them ended up with an empty box for $1000
eBay is definitely full of weirdness. Some years ago I sold two near HO Scale die cast 18 Wheelers that were given to me by truck lines as token gifts for my work with them. My research on eBay showed the exact models selling for $8 Each, so I posted both as one Lot at a minimum bid of $15 plus shipping. Imagine my amazement when in an epic bidding war as Maletrain described, the hammer fell at $120! For the fun of it, I looked at the Buyer's address on Google Maps and found a huge sprawling house in NJ .... probably full of die-cast trucks.
Why is it that nothing like this ever happen when I posted stuff for sale. I always started with a $1 bid and stuff that should have sold for $50 would seemingly sell for $25...
When I still used that venue, I tried it a few times and on every one, got burned. Which means that I lost money. Something I cannot afford to do, so dropped that idea, permanently.
Didn't think so. As far as I can recall, the prices on these items starting softening way back during the 1990's.
I'll start buying these when they can sing the Star Spangled Banner backwards. I am certain that will be their next upgrade.

At first I thought that this would just be a misplaced decimal (other than its all numbers and no 0's). A look at his other auctions says he has two prices: $99.98 and $539.97. Most of his auctions are the $539 price tag...but free shipping.
