I need a replacement motor for a GP-35. I remember seeing a good price on some replacement motors from AZL, I think, but i can't find the link now. Anyone know how i can get another motor - with flywheels attached? Thanks.

AZL has their motors available on their retail site: azldirect.com. I think you may first want to see if MTL has the motors available. From what I've seen, I don't think an AZL (or Rokuhan) motor would be a simple drop-in replacement.

Mark, David is a master kitbasher. He can make circle fit perfectly into a square.

LOL. John, your confidence in my abilities is exaggerated. Sometime ago I got an email of someone selling single shaft and dual shaft motors for a reasonable price. Though it was ZTrack, but it didn't show up when I looked. Maybe I missed the sale.

I want to fix my two GP35 Chassis which are without motors (though I still have all the guts). MTL a while back used motors with ceramic shafts -- which can (did) break. So now I'll probably get them through "motorman," but had hoped someone had the link to the cheaper ones.

I have since decided that I will use an SD40-2 chassis on my next project. I'm building a DD35A. I decided it would be better to add a wheel to the SD bolster than try to add two to a GP (besides, the GP wheel base is too long making it the wrong one to use). It will also be easier to stretch the SD40-2. I pretty much have the shell done (except for paint) with the chassis-extension and sideframes to do next. So, still a lot to do. I just couldn't resist trying since I had the GP35 shells and thought it would be a unique and fun project.

In other news, i'm FINALLY building my layout! Retirement has its merits.

Good to see you are still in Z. Missed your kit bashes!
Looking forward to see the DD35. I got requests to build some, but the 4-axle trucks made me headaches. On top some of the last SD40-2 chassis batches from MTL made in China literally fell apart, therefore I have stopped all projects using this chassis. Hope you have success.

Thanks Gerd. Love your work very much. Didn't know about the latest SD40-2 failures. I was thinking about buying a new one, but I'll choose now to use the (older) one I have. Very sweet runner. Side frame built - now I'll have to mold them. Side frames are the hardest part of this, as you indicated.

Didn't know they had an old and a new. Thought they were all made in the one run. They haven't made any since the Sanda Kan collapse a few years ago, I believe.

The new run was made after the Sandra Kan stop making the SD40. I heard they stop making SD40's and GP35's when they ran out of the coreless motors.

Doesn't matter if they were made in one run or two, fact is the quality of the zinc pressure casted chassis on early SD40-2 like KCS and BN were much better

Rob, they will not fit without major surgery.

David, try to contact Joe D'Amato from MTL, he can help you out.

got a Rohukan motor from Ztrack. it did take some surgery, but it's in and running fine! $19 motor! I like that. not for the faint-hearted, but doable.
Thank you all for your input and suggestions. BTW got another SD40-2 from Caboose today: KCS. All my SD40-2s have been converted. 2 to Tunnel Motors (Rio Grande), one to SD9 and now one to go into the DD35. last step is molding the side frames (and adding an extra wheel to the truck). Everything else is done. I think I have enough engines and rolling stock now, which makes me sad, because I LOVE kitbashing engines. maybe i'll make another tunnel motor (they look better as a set of three) or another SD9. But first I want to get my layout going.

Went to a train swap meet in Denver today. unloaded about a third of my old N scale stuff. Yeah!
