Hey there fellow railfans! Been lurking here for a couple months and was about to make my first post but figured I should do a quick introduction first. I'm JT, currently living in Virginia and just getting started again with train layouts since I was a kid! This last Christmas I setup an O scale train around the tree and caught the bug again so now I'm working on a hollow core door (HCD) N scale layout.

Great to meet you all, cheers!

Welcome aboard! You will probably find that there are many other bi-scalar modelers around her.

Thanks! I believe the O scale will be left for just Christmastime but I'm excited to see what I can do with N scale year round!

Hi JT, Welcome. I agree, N-Scale gives you the opportunity to be more creative, but still stay in a small space.

Here's what I'm playing with while I decide on a final layout:

Nice, gives you a good test and running track while experimenting with different configurations.

Exactly! I'm planning to move sometime later this year so I don't plan to get into any permanent scenery but I can certainly play with different track plans and maybe start some buildings. I also plan to play around with other scenery on a throw-away board for practice.

Great to meet you JT. I did the same thing. My wife bought me an O gauge for the tree and I set it up and away I went. I was thinking of using a hollow core door, where did you get it from? I looked in Lowes etc and they were flat. I was thinking of using a folding table, light weight and already has legs etc. Welcome aboard!

Door came from Home Depot, though I had to order it to get the 36" wide version - http://www.homedepot.com/p/Masonite...-Composite-Interior-Door-Slab-16739/202768985
Then I glued (4) 1 x 4's across the bottom for support and attached these folding legs with screws - http://www.homedepot.com/p/Waddell-Folding-Banquet-Table-Legs-2-Pack-2775/100048820

So far I'm very happy with the setup! One of the big advantages will be portability when I move later this year.

Should be nice and solid. Many folks have been happy doing the same way, or very similarly.

Looks nice. I looked at using a table from Lowes http://www.lowes.com/pd_179826-87896-UT12L3U541_0__?productId=3315204&Ntt= not as wide at 30" but 96" long. I am running N Scale so I thought this may work ok. I like your solution though so I may re-think it.
