Mike, look into "Continuous Add" lenses instead of tri-focals. Camilla and I have had them for at least 25 years, maybe longer, and love them. The lenses are ground to change focus from reading on the bottom to distance on the top. It's just a matter of positioning your head up and down for the best focus. Took each of us about a week to get used to them. Once the brain got trained, it became automatic. For instance, as I'm typing this on a laptop, I occasionally glance up at a hummingbird feeder 12-13 feet away, then out to the end of the driveway 500' away. At no time am I conscious of moving my head, it's just where it needs to be automatically....LOVE 'EM!

 

Thanks so much but I have tried several styles of lenses and the problem under the layout is I need the close lens on top. I think I need glasses that flip over !!!

Perhaps what you need are contact lenses (if they will correct your sight issue), that is what I fitted with when I complained to my eye doctor about not being able to focus when working under the layout doing some wiring while warring my glasses with bifocals. I have had my contacts for some time, it started with the same problem that you described.
I have multi focal contacts and one eye is for distance and one is for close up.
When I am doing fine work I still use an optivisor or a 1.75 pair of reading glasses with my contacts depending on what I am doing, but for work under the layout the contacts work fine for me when looking up like to do wiring.
Just my thought that it may help you?

 

Mike...would wearing strong reading glasses while working under the layout help ? *just thinking out loud*

Happy to see you and Gavin making videos and working on the ACT together. The coal loader scene is a great upgrade to the layout and will provide some operating interest as well.

When I lived in Texas, my next door neighbor, who did lots of needle work, actually had her optometrist make a pair of glasses with the "close" lens on the top, rather than the bottom. You might ask your favorite eyeglass purveyor about this. Since I have graduated bifocals, I've thought about doing this same thing, although I usually just take off my glasses to do the close work. Less convenient, for sure, but also less costly!
