I have a number of Athearn locomotives that the sound is on when you power up the layout. Is there a CV that deactivates sound on the loco until the loco ID is called? I have a Broadway limited SW15 that defaults to no sound until you power up the loco?

Those Athearns just like to wake up and stretch their speakers. ;)

Check your DCC owners manual to see which button that controls sound off/on. If just DC check your loco manual.

    Gats provided me the answer

"CV 113 enables quiet mode. Any value other 0 sets the decoder to turn off after a period of time. Each value equals 1/10 second, so CV 113 = 120 means the loco will mute after 12 seconds or being at zero throttle. Any action, whether it be a speed change or function operation, will enable sound. If you set the value too low it will mute the loco prematurely. If switching work out how long the throttle will remain at zero speed before moving again and set CV 113 slightly higher"

Not sure if this pertains to your quest : On NCE PowerCab, keypad 8 turns the sound off or on on loco you choose. Could hit 8 on ones you want silent and will remain so whether power is on or off.

Not at home. Maybe you are right. But I think sound remains off for loco until power is up and 8 is hit again, for same l0co to return sound. Will test and report back.

CV116 controls Engine Exhaust sound on Tsunamis. Bit number 5 set to o makes the engine remain quiet until dialed up and speed step hits 1.
Note that the bits run right to left, 0 - 7. So bit 5 would have a value of 32 if set to 1.
