Can anyone tell me the purpose of all the elaborate hardware up on top of this grain dumping shed? The rectangular box is connected to the round tanks by a downward pipe, so maybe some sort of dust filtration system?

    Thanks!

    Just an 'unedumacated guess'...

On top of the small round tank is the dust filter. The small round tank under it may be a 'seperator'. The large round tank holds the grain for the railcars fed by the chute to the right of the door. The rectangular holding bin holds the 'seperated junk' which would be picked up by a truck backed under the round shute inside the shed. The 'junk' may be trucked somewhere and mixed with other 'junk' and fed to livestock.

like I said just an 'unedumacated guess'...sounds good to me anyways...LOL

I agree with George that it is most likely a grain cleaner. There are a number of types including at least one that works primarily by gravity. Different screens for different grains that sort out pieces of cob from corn, and weeds and sticks plus insects from and whatever else the combine picked up from grain harvest.

Not sure what this particular device is, but I want to mention that cleaning grain is not the only issue. Preventing conditions that might lead o grain dust explosions is important. When grain dust is in some specific concentration in air, it is explosive. I have known of two major explosions at an export elevator in Corpus Christi. Saw one burning from miles away after it blew top third off several 20-foot-diameter concrete silos. Killed nine employees.

It used to be that when driving by a grain elevator which was working, there'd be a light coating of dust on the surroundings. That doesn't seem to be true any longer, which the present facility we have here. I'd bet that item has something to do with cleaning up dust or grain itself.

Something evidently goes down into that round silo/tank way to the left in that downward pipe which is then emptied into a railcar through that rectangularly cross-sectioned chute.

Mark, do you still have the Hope, MN thing going?

Dudes, I appreciate all of the random speculation. But dang, how am I supposed to to get all of the operational internals working properly on my model without some legitimate advice from expertland? I mean, I assume all of y'alls' grain elevators are fully operational, yah? :)

What corn crop there were was almost drowned and washed out by all the flooding. What survived has already been spoken for by Bubba for his woods operation. Something about a big batch of sour mash for George.

Are the cylinders from a Walthers tank kit?

Good eye - they are indeed. And the little round separator between the two tanks is a tire from an HO scale Humvee :)

Those paint colors actually match the facility here in my town. Nice.
