Model Railroader has completed a a very nice N-Scale, CB&Q layout on an HCD door, for the Jan-April 2015 magazines. There are also have short videos on its construction, some of which can be viewed for free this weekend thru 4/28, on the Modelrailroader.com web site. Video items that I liked included: benchwork for HCD, wiring on HCD, hiding holes in the backdrop with scenery, constructing a pole line and fence. I think that you will find these videos helpful. Normally, you need a MR Video Plus subscription to see these videos. But, the site is "unlocked" and free this weekend. Once on the site, I would search for "Red Oak" in the search box.
I've been following this series both in the magazine and on Model Railroader Video Plus - I really like the series and have used a lot of things on my N Scale HCD layout. Would definitely recommend watching them.
All I found where 'teaser' videos to get you to sign up. No full videos. Wasnt about to click on everything just for teasers. JMO YMMV
Same here. I was just there, and could not find a non-registered user video link. Everything I saw states you must be registered. The track plan requires registering, etc.
I looked at he registration. It required your email and then it asks whether you want to receive emails from MR and allows you to check NO. So, I think registering is not doing you any harm.
Dont wanna sound like a stick in the mud but... "Unlocked" and "Free" to me means "No strings attached"...that would include email info or registration in my book... JMO YMMV . That being said...if a person were to 'signup' to see the videos for the weekend....does that mean 'registered users' would need the "MR Video Plus subscription" to view videos in the future ? I am sure the 'MR Video Plus subscription' is a paid subscription service. Correct me if I am wrong...tia :closedmouth:
Does anyone else think the prices for MRR Video Plus are a bit excessive? I mean, a 12mo subscription to MRR is already on the pricier side of magazine subscriptions. But they also want substantial extra fees for the video feature, or even the digital issues (ie for iPad, Kindle). I do understand that MRR is not Vanity Fair, or Rolling Stone, and the Video Plus fees are probably there to offset the overhead production costs of making the videos. Ehh, I just wish money were no object and I could gladly fork over the dough to support them! For the record, I do pay for the basic subscription to MRR.
I personally don't think they are too bad. I usually subscribe / renew from the little inserts in the magazine which are significantly cheaper. I don't remember what MRVP was, but I don't recall it being outrageous.
I suppose I'm comparing MRR to other subscriptions I have or have had in the past (Dirt Rider, Motocross Action, Transworld Snowboarding, Surfer, etc.), which are usually around $20 for a year. MRR is more like $45 for the basic subscription. It's nothing I'm too concerned about. I think I'm just mildly groaning because it's Monday.
You gotta love Model Railroad Hobbyist! Those guys are truly doing great things for the hobby. I wish they had a print magazine too. With as often as I'm on computers, between work and home, there's something nice about reading a good ol' fashion magazine. Sorry for the thread hijack I do love what MRR did with Red Oak layout! That's such a great compact track plan.
I recently had an email forward from a friend, who was passing along about someone starting up a new model RR e-zine. My first though was 'did they do their homework, first?'
There is a new one, can't recall the name, but it is a pay-for subscription, $14.95/year if I recall correctly.
What frosts me about MR is that, if you choose to support your LHS by buying the magazine there, you can't get access to the "free" benefits that come with a subscription. I wonder how LHS owners feel about this policy?
That's what it's about. This is basic marketing strategy. But if it adds to your enjoyment, it's a win-win situation.
