Model still needs heavy weathering, ladders and water level gauges. The bottom of all parts of the model is a base that will be glued to the layout. This model like all on the layout can be lifted off their base for scenery work, maintenance and adding future structures. No scenery will be added to this part of the layout until several other structures are added. Robert
Good work. Very similar to the one I built on my Cajon layout. I used plans from one of the ATSF standards books, and included the small shack with them. Made a nice lineside scene.
I followed the same plan (in Vol3 of System Standards). I changed the paint color for the chemical storage and mixing building (on the right) and the pump valve frost box (in between the two tanks) to mineral brown to reflect the colors used in the late steam era. I also changed the tanks from riveted to welded seams as was also done by the late steam era. The peaked roof on the 24' dia service tanks which were riveted were replaces with flat roofs in later years. Wondering if leakage became a problem over time. Took a phone cam pic to show the water treatment facility, roundhouse, sandhouse and boilerhouse off of their respective bases. Robert

Amongst the many books I have there is a photo of these enourmous water tanks out in the middle of some desert or another that stored water used by ATSF steam locomotives. Every drop of that water had to be shipped in by “tank trains” because the locally available “Ground Water”, assuming there was enough to be had, had so much dissolved mineral content that it would have wreacked any boiler that used it. It’s no wonder that the Santa Fe became one of the first RRs to embrace EMD’s FT diesel/electric locomotive.
I too modeled welded tanks. Used two pieces of scrapp from a plumbing project that were strangely quite close to exact scale. My structure was smaller than yours I think, but i don't remember which plan I used, just that it was from the standards book. Yes, weather it a lot, rust streaks and chemical deposits.
Weathering base completed. Won't add powders until its warmer outside to seal with dull coat. Have several storage buildings to add to area before the scenery can be added. Also included pic showing the bases that the structures all have. Sure makes construction and maintenance easier. Robert
Last tank finished for the water treatment facility. Slender (16' dia) tank was the treatment tank. The 45' tall, 24' dia tank was the service tank. The 60' tall 24'dia tank was the storage tank. Still haven't weathered the 60' tank, and may leave it as is to represent a newer tank added later. Robert
