I'm taking a break from N scale for now. I built a simple Inglenook switching puzzle on an HCD that'll be used for servicing a brewery. Right now I've got an Alco HH600 built by Atlas as my only HO scale engine. I'd like to pick up a more modern switcher, maybe a GP7, SW1500, MP15, etc. Ideally in Conrail or Norfolk Southern livery. Any suggestions for a solid performing quality locomotive? I've had the worst run of luck with N scale locomotives lately.
Can't help you with that one as I am a HO'er. I'm sure someone in the 'N' scale forum might be able to answer your question though.
Sorry for the confusion but I'm looking for HO scale engine recommendations. I was looking at the Athearn SW1500 but wanted to know if it has a good or bad reputation for low speed performance, noise level, detail, etc.
I am also new to HO, have a small 1' x 10' switching layout; bought a Walthers RS-2 ( Rock Island #450 ). Box is marked Mainline, but bottom of engine is marked Proto 1000. Whatever they want to call it, it has been a solid, very quiet runner. My railroads CEO, chief engineer, and advisor ( 6 yr. old grandson ) is also very happy with it.
Basically a mainline that goes across the length of shelf, passing siding in the middle; 3 spurs for industries that are set as backgroung buildings along the wall ( back of layout ), a team track on the right front, and a spur which, at CEO's request, will have an engine house on it. Used Atlas code 83 snap track and turnouts, and a few pieces of Peco flex track.....so far so good, the CEO's happy, so Papa is happy too
I wound up ordering the Athearn SW1500, Conrail #9504. First HO locomotive in a long time for me, we'll see how it does. Railhead, do you have a track plan for your layout? Sounds nice, simple, fun.
Hope the SW1500 works well for you. I don't have the necessary gear to take and post pictures; sorry.....
I would think you will be happy with it. I've been using Athearn for a long time. The units I put away 25 years ago pretty much run well now that I have them back out. The new stuf amazes me on how well they will run. My COO is wise beyond his 4 years, if it lights, smokes, and makes noise, he is a happy camper. He is really fond of steam power.
