Came across a website while browsing one of my favorite tech blogs today I thought I'd share with the group. Photographer John Sanderson has done a few series that I think does well to capture the essence of those scenes or moments that we try to replicate in our modelling. Perhaps some of John's scenes can provide some inspiration or creative spark! There is a series navigation bar on the left, and one giant scrolly bar on the bottom of the page to slide left/right through photos: http://john-sanderson.com/ (my favorite series is Railroad Landscape II)

    Enjoy -Mike

I actually thought this was a thread on scenes that inspire for model RR building, so I thought I'd throw a photo in that might just do that for some one. I like this photo because it has two tasks going on at the same time in a "tight" space - container business and a granary:

That's a great idea and thanks for the added pics! We do a lot of admiring of our favorite locomotives or consists with detailing and weathering in mind, but it's also inspirational to just take in a good prototype "scene" that tells a story even without the train.

Would love to see more from anyone that has their own favorite shots along this theme!

Some of Sanderson's photos were quite nice. They reminded me of photos I've taken. :)
This is a small yard that was along I90 / Mass Pike inside the Boston city limits:

It is gone now but as you might be able to tell the yard shared space with a trailer and container service. I am thinking I might try a three track version of it.
I like taking pics of industries from the windows of trains and have quite a few that I keep for ideas and details.

I intend to build this scene on my layout:

I have always been drawn to the converging lines of a long stretch of track and want to know what is around that bend.

The buildings look like they are out of a Walther's catalogue:

Great stuff, guys! Yeah, that does look like a Walther's catalog! If there were lens shift on that you probably couldn't tell it wasn't a model.

I'm wanting to model Arizona open country. In the south part of the state the Southern Pacific ran, in the northern part of the state it was Santa Fe. I was thinking a two level layout, bottom level southern AZ, upper level northern AZ. The red rocks Verde Canyon Railroad was owned and operate by Santa Fe until the late 80's for mining. Now it's a tourist train.

Those are some great terrain shots, Steve! A two-level would be awesome showcasing the diversity of Arizona's landscape (Phoenix resident here) Mountain on top makes sense with desert below, although I could see flipping the order to desert on top to give a more "open" feel. I love desert landscape model rr's - for some reason. :)

    Cheers, Mike
