Should train yard track have a roadbed the same as the mainlines and all other track on the layout? Seems to me I read that yard track does not have roadbed and is layed right on the base. If there is no roadbed on the yard track - what's the best way to transition from the height of track with roadbed to the yard track with none?

I used a large roll of cork, 3' x 12', the same thickness as my roadbed.

Sometimes yards are the same, many other times not. This is uaully because over the years, main tracks get refreshing of ballast and end up being raised. Whereas yards get less of this done, so end up being lower.

In modeling, some folks just lay yard tracks on the scenery base. Some use the sheet cork technique.

I also went with the cork sheet approach, same height as the mainline cork
