Hey guys, I was wondering is it possible to use any of the static grass tufts, buffalo grass or or even the heki grass fiber mats for n scale? Also would it be a good idea too add grass tufts on the edges of the river bank and around rocks, etc.
I purchased 3 or 4 types of Silflor tufts for my n-scale layout. I liked the appearance and ease of use. I wanted autumn colors and various lengths. Later I purchased a static grass fiber applicator, thus I was able to get a variety of types of grasses.
I've used Silflor grass tufts of all sizes and lots of Buffalo grass on my large N scale layout. All types of these different grasses enhance the look of any layout. Go for it and have fun scenicking your layout. Shades
Siflor is a fantastic product for N-Scale. I have about five different Siflor tuft styles that I've used on my HCD-sized layout. I have some 2mm, 4mm, and 6mm. The 6mm is great for really overgrown areas, but you can also trim them down.
I'm not sure of the brand, but I saw static grass on an N-scale layout at Trainfest and thought it looked awesome. I fully plan on using it on my layout when I get to that point. If you use it, please post pictures!
If you have a static grass applicator, you can make your own tufts. Just put lots of drops of white glue on a metal cookie sheet, spray down with a bit of water, hook up the ground lead, and apply the static grass. If you want to do two color tufts, lightly vacuum up the first color, then apply a longer fiber over it while it is still mostly wet. {these photos are from when there were still on the metal sheet} I made some winter/spring time cattails using three different lengths of grass as an experiment: It takes a bit of trial and error, but you can make dozens of them for pennies, once you get the hang of it.
These look really nice! Those top bunches remind me of growth around a favorite fishing hole, back when I was young.
I use them all over my layout and here is another suggestion for them. Mike
Great idea for tufts! And simple too, which is great. Just needed someone like you to show us how, cheers! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
This is a mixture of bought mat and tufts, home made tufts and directly applied static grass. Variation is key to get a natural appearance. This isn't N scale, it's Z...
