    Folks,
I am looking for a photo of UP locomotive 165, later 573. She was a 4-4-0 built by Taunton in 1870, and sold to F. M. Hicks in Chicago in 1901.
    Any suggestions?

Do you know where it worked during years of service? If so, sometimes that can point you to a collection in a regional university library, or museum.

Has anyone heard of The Ron V. Nixon Collection? Lots of old locomotive and train photographs. I do not know how to search the collection, but if a steam engine was photographed it's likely there.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not a UP guy, so I'm having to do some homework to help with the search. I'm not sure where the loco was used, but the 1871 UP annual report says it was used for passenger service. I've found the Ron Nixon collection and didn't find anything available online. I've also checked some of the usual suspects like the Denver Public Library, Museum of the Rockies, etc. I'm used to researching these little shortlines that no one has heard of, and I guess I just assumed a huge line like the UP would have all of this information on a platter, ready for me to ask! But then again, the discovery is the fun part!

Ron's photography was mostly done in the Pacific Northwest. He did make a few trips outside the area. Some UP, but not a lot. His lifetime was long after those dates given in post 1, of that particular UP locomotive. He did collect some old NP photos.

I am sure you have tried the Union Pacific Historical Society?

I've had pretty good luck over the past couple of days, and I've met some great people who have really helped. Found a picture in one of Gerald Best's books I don't own, and have some new facts on the engine in question.

Are you planning on some modeling work? Or mainly seeking history on the locomotive?

    Purely history.
I'm trying to complete an updated roster that includes photos and drawings of all 12 of the locomotives owned by the Richmond, Nicholasville, Irvine & Beattyville Railroad, and its successor the Louisville & Atlantic Railroad.
Not much has been written on this line and it's a pet project of mine.

Hmmmm. I'd never heard of that line. It must be many, many decades long gone.

Yes it is. (was.) The RNI&B started in 1888 and became the L&A in 1900. The Louisville & Nashville bought the L&A in 1909 and it became part of the Eastern Kentucky Division in 1916. The line was abandoned in 1932.
