Hey has anyone tried building one of these laser cut wood cabooses from AMB. Looks Like the NP is the newest in their line. Just curious about how they go together. Marc
I didn't know AMB offered rolling stock kits. If these are anything like their structures then the kits will be accurate, well documented, logical steps, precisely cut, and a thing of beauty when complete. I've sworn by AMB structure kits for many years.
Yes. I've built the Frisco 3 window wood caboose and it's a very enjoyable build. Some peel and stick stuff and some CA glueing. Very well detailed and I even added working marker lamps. I have a second kit that I haven't built yet but they go together well and included good instructions.
I have done five of their GN style caboose kits. Take your time and check and double check the positioning of parts because if these have the side overlays on a substructure like mine did you need to get the positioning right the first time. Also If the end rails are laser cut wood it helps to put a coat of thin ACC on them and allow to dry to strengthen them. Also my kits did not have trucks or couplers and the kit recommendation was to use the Atlas caboose trucks which I followed. Also it helps to prepaint the wood parts prior to using any glue as the paint will not penetrate the glue well and there will be a slight difference in the finish in the area where there is glue.
Wow…. that almost looks like a bigger scale… Great Work and BTW what is that parked next to the caboose… crane?
I have completely built one Norfolk and Western caboose and have two others on the workbench. They are very nice builds and like previously stated the instructions are very detailed and easy to follow. I weathered mine two different ways: one was a india ink wash and the other was a technique I read a few months ago in MR where they rub weathering powder on the wood. I personally like the india ink wash best because I think it has more of an even coat. The one downside that I can say is the trucks on mine were too close to the steps and wouldn't allow any travel in the trucks, so I drilled new holes a few millimeters back and actually looks better as well as runs better. A lot of peel and stick small parts which was very tedious to do (window sills, windows, etc.) I highly recommend them as they are a beautiful kit all around. Hope this helps. Shawn
I would like to thank everyone for there input I think I will have a go at one of these kits. I will let everyone know how it turns out. Thanks again, Marc
