I picked up a new Con-Cor PA1 last weekend and it has an interesting paint scheme. My other gray PA1 look like this. But the new one looks like this? Is this an actual paint scheme or has this been altered? I kind of like it, with out the silver as well it looks longer! -James
The bottom photo's nose paint looks to be incomplete. It should look like the top photo. Regards, Wolf
Hi Wolf, thanks, that's what I thought at first as well. What made me think different is somebody has taken the time to make this symmetrical and round the edges of the paint, looking at the number board, they have done a nice job around there. So I guess it is something somebody has made up, but I am tempted to keep it. -James
what's throwing the bottom photo 'off'...is the fact that the numberboards are all wrong for an SP Alco....they should be the bigger 45 degree numberboards instead of the ATSF and DRGW style versions here... in the first photo, they just painted over them...in the second photo, they made an effort to go around the numberboards like a black widow scheme would have done... strange- Bruce
Hey Guys, Yeah- what Bruce has said is so true. I was concentrating on the paint scheme. For sure, the lower one has a made up paint scheme. To add to the details-- they both need the lower headlight. As the "upper" one is a signal light. These would depict as delviered PA's (Body detail -wise). By the time the "bloody nose paint scheme was applied- these locomotives went through a thorough rebuild and upgrade program. Wolf
He said it was a Con-Cor. What else can you say as they even like to put black widow on just about anything. Carl
They are both wrong according to the pics I found online. The upper unit the red goes to far back on the sides behind the number boards. The lower one the red doesn't go all the way back on the nose, or far enough behind the number boards. http://espee.railfan.net/nonindex/pa_photos/6008_sp-pa1-jim_sands_collection.jpg http://espee.railfan.net/nonindex/pa_photos/6043_sp-pa2-jim_sands_collection.jpg
He's right, neither are correct. Concor just changed any paint scheme to fit what they had (in this case, as already pointed out, a ATSF/D&RG PA unit). Number boards and headlight(s) are wrong. In the top loco, the silver on the air intakes should be just grey and the ends of the red wings should be more rounded like the bottom photo. Other than that, the bottom loco is a work in progress with the red missing from the top of the short hood. The lower part of the pilot should be red as well. http://espee.railfan.net/nonindex/pa_photos/6008_sp-pa1-jim_sands_collection.jpg http://espee.railfan.net/nonindex/pa_photos/6015_sp-pa1-don_jewell.jpg http://espee.railfan.net/nonindex/pa_photos/6043_sp-pa2-jim_sands_collection.jpg
Thanks guys, I only picked it up for the motor, is going in a SP daylight PB. Now I don't have to worry that I am missing the point about a special paint job. -James
I loved the old Con Cor "Dream Schemes." They saved me from having had to painting them myself. I just appreciate all that Jim did to promote N scale. Without him I doubt N scale would be where it is today. Obviously there was a market for strange things back in the old days that no longer exists today.
We didn't have the morning sun color guides back then either. I didn't think there was as much info back in the 70s as there is today. I think most people (myself included) didn't know a foob from fact. It wasn't until recently (last 10 years) that I found out the Milwaukee didn't have ALCo PAs. Randy
What about what ConCor did to the GS-4's they came out with...Pennsy, UP, SF, NP, D&RG (all with a coal tender), WP without smoke lifters (even though ConCor had them on the UP engines) or the turbines...SP (in black widow no less), GN, SF, CSX. Instead of calling them Foo-bees, we should call them Con-cors.
