Looking ahead to the spring and getting the travel trailer ready for the season, I was looking into replacing the interior lights with LED’s and came across this on ebay.

    LED1.jpg

They arrived in the mail today and testing them out on the work bench I got to thinking these just might work for lighting up a layout. They stay cool and have a very low profile. The layout I am building is shelf style with about 16 to 18 ” space between the tracks and the bottom of high cabinets. I’ve been looking into those LED strips but these seem like they would be more flexible in their installation.

Has anybody else tried these for layout lighting ?

    Thanks

It's great you posted this because I have been doing some lighting exploration myself. I haven't used the large panel yet, but here's what I have been experimenting on:
    - I picked up 10 of the "pico" SMD LED chips. As far as I know, they come in cool white only. They are so small - about the size of the text on a penny. I plan on using them with special covers I'll make to do single point lighting, such as street lights, lamps, etc.

    - fiber optics for delicate lighting in signals (kits are on the way to experiment with

    - EL tape filetered through a ceiling grid to simulate office lighting. EL tape and EL panels draw little current and provide a uniform light distribution without a hot spot like the SMDs and other LEDs will. I plan on using an SMD panel to simulate the outside of an underground station when viewed from under the layout. I will print a color transparency for the light to go through.

    - I also am working on making 1mm LED covers to simulate industrial overhead lighting as well as flood lights

    Did somebody say LED's? ? ? ?

There are some fiber optics as well.
