Anyone know where I can get a Southern Ry Tobacco Car? N-scale Nevada produced a kit in the late 90's.
On that note, I can't even find any real Barber S2 70 ton roller bearing trucks in N Scale. Those are the ones used on that railcar. This of course means I am ... curious about it.
According to this thread: http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?142968-N-Scale-of-Nevada-New-Owner N Scale of Nevada was bought out by Wiseman Model Services, http://www.locopainter.com/ and their website says that they have 'acquired all of the tooling' from NSN but they only actually list one item as being available and it isn't the car you want. Maybe try and contact him and see if he has anything. Other than that, that auction site will pretty much be your only chance (and of course the 'for sale' part of this site).
Might be worth placing a WANTED ad in our Swap Meet section. Whatever it was that Wiseman acquired, nothing much seems to have happened. Last time I recall anything, he'd asked folks for help with some items, was loaned things, and they'd as yet not been returned.
For what it's worth, I started making a 3d model of it last night since it looked simple and unique, and unavailable. Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk
Here's a question: Do the doors slide to the same end of the car on both sides, or opposite directions?
We recently produced a Barber S2a 70 ton solud bearing truck for the popular Prairie Shadows gondolas. These were iften converted to roller bearing trucks in the 1960's. Maybe you could swap a pair of those out for your project? "Rapido" Mike
From the pictures I can find online(Google, Southern Railfan, etc.), it looks like all doors slide open to the right like most box cars.
There was an article in one of the N scale mags a couple years ago on how to make one of these cars. It's one of my "some day" projects !!!
The "Tobacco Barns" were the most distinctive of the cars that were used to haul tobacco but there were several other types that were also found in this service, especially so for R.J. Reynolds in Winston-Salem... the most unique were the Central of Georgia 50' aluminum plug-door cushion-underframe ribbed boxcars. With their unique lettering (only applied to these CG cars even though they were purchased after the SOU merger) and silver doors they were easily spotted in freights when in transit, with the Winston-Salem Southbound yard typically being full of them through the 1970s and early-80s. They were some of the last CG cars to start receiving the SR's "Green Light" paint scheme, largely because they were the last cars lettered new for the CG... http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/freight/box/ebaycg3649.html http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/freight/box/cofg4010.jpg http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/freight/box/551128.jpg http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/freight/box/551178.jpg
I've been working on the model to produce through Shapeways, but unfortunately it's going to be on the expensive side due to the length of the car and how much support the thin material surfaces need. I'll still finish it, eventhough I'm pretty sure it won't end up on anyone's layout.
The Hogshead car would be pretty easy to scratchbuild. I've thought about it for awhile, but other projects keep coming up. Someday when I get bored.. The MRG article is a pretty good starting point.
I remember seeing those cars in the 1980s being used to haul bulk tire shipments from BF Goodrich in Woodburn IN.
Eventhough the article says the trucks are Barber S2 70 ton roller bearing trucks, in some of the photos, it looks like they have ride control trucks (4 spring instead of 3 spring). Anyway, here's a shot of the door detail on the side: Some of the underbody framing is done, but the rest needs to be finished. The car ends aren't done as well, including the huge coupler housings. Did those housings pivot at all?
"Did those housings pivot at all?" Slide Yes... pivot No. The detail looks good!!! Hopefully it will be possible to get a clean print once the completed car has been drawn!!!
Sorry, but I guess I don't know who you represent when you say "we". Could you add a link to your products in your posts? Or is that of limits here?
As far as the trucks go, it looks like it will be the ASF 70 ton ride control trucks. All of the images I can find seem to show that type. Different problem: That huge coupler arm... I have it modeled to scale, but at scale, it won't hold the few coupler dimensions I know of. I could make it very noticeably larger, or just leave it to the modeler to decide what to do. I'm leaning towards the latter, since the oversized arm looks rediculous. It would be a great opportunity for a Z scale coupler, but that decision should not be made by me.
