I'm finally getting back in to working on my own stuff since I got a place of my own and room for a layout. I haven't messed with D&RGW stuff in N scale in about 5 yrs, at least. I'd really like to get after expanding my Rio Grande locomotive fleet and renumbering about 15 IM tunnel motors I have. However, I remember the hassle that it was becoming to try and model the D&RGW. When I boxed it up, I had Micro-scale decals 60-28 (& 60-271 stripes) that were a different shade of orange every time I bought a new set. Some of the last decals I bought were the new, for earlier 60's-70's lighter yellow/gold, 60-1128 and 60-1129(stripes). Those showed up(and I still have them) and there is nothing yellow/gold about them, they are a light shade of brown. That being said, I've recently looked at the micro-scale website and the 60-28 looks to be a somewhat correct orange for later units (SD50's etc.) and the 60-1128 looks like it might be good yellow/gold after it's put on a black unit. Are the colors on the decals good now, consistent each time they are printed? Do the colors on the decals match any available paint?... I got lots of Pollyscale D&RGW yellow. Does the 60-1128 set match, or is it close enough to the yellow/gold that Atlas and IM have been using? Trainworx offers a Micro-scale 60-28 "correct orange" decal set, opinions? Details! I'm gonna need Mars lights!!!... or something close enough that looks like one. I got 2 Sunrise mars lights, I know I ain't getting anymore of those, and that isn't enough to build a fleet. I remember Trainworx asking around if there was any interest in a mars light detail part some time ago, but it looks as though nothing came of that? What do I do and where do I go? Also, does anyone make the "V" shaped butterfly re-rail frog that was typical on Grande units? I see Miniatures By Eric has one, but it doesn't look right for D&RGW. Paints: How is Tru-Color paint, is their D&RGW yellow any good? Thanks for any help you can provide. Kevin
hi you could make a cast of the mars light. and i use tru-color it is like accu-paint. i like the paint and if you mean the sunrise ent. n-800 late type rerail frog. i have a package that has 3 in it.
The decals you need: http://www.nscalesupply.com/MSD/NSS-60-28.html They custom ordered a bunch printed in the exact shade of Aspen Gold you need. I did a schwack of diesels with these decals and they look great. As for paint, I used Modelflex D&RGW Gold. That was years ago--no telling if that paint is even available now. Here's the result:
Hemi, thanks for the tip. Do those decals closely match what IM has used for aspen gold on their tunnel motors? NS737, N-800 is the style I'm looking for. You can send me a pm and let me know how much you want for them if you're wanting to part with them.
I think it's a match, especially once weathered. I bought 3 unnumbered TMs and added these decals for numbers.
NS737, sure did, just responded. Hemi, those look awesome. Thanks again. Now I just need to tackle this mars light issue.
Thanks, MRL, the photos are several years old. I bought a batch of 10 of those decal sets because they match so well.
