So, if you've been reading my blog, you'll know my planning has been pushed into interstellar overdrive. I think I've got everything sorted, save for this sawmill which I just can't visualize!

    This is the prototype: http://goo.gl/maps/DlsXh

In my era, it had a 6-car loading shed plus a 4-car chip track. The interchange is with BN, allowing for a local of no more than, say, 2 locos and 8 cars to trundle in from a single hidden track.

All my designs so far are attached. If they show up in order, here are the ideas.

The loading shed is reddish-brown, and the brownery-brown building is a small potato warehouse on the BN track.

The first and third plans have the loading shed on the near side. I'm not sure if I like this, due to it blocking the warehouse somewhat. The first plan has the chip track on the far side with the chip pile, which I find pretty intuitive. In the fourth, the chip track is on the near side, but the pile is on the far side. The second plan has the chip pile on the near side with the chip track, but all the buildings are on the far side.

The railhead here is approximately 60" above the floor.

    Your thoughts?

    Hi Trainboy,
I'm torn between a loads-in/empties-out scheme vs. a small stub end yard for the sawmill on my own layout. My recommendation is to place your buildings behind the sidings to allow easy access for spotting cars without knocking other things over. Now let's just hope I can take my own advice

Hmmm. You can put the chip loader about anyplace near the chip piles. Those are easily conveyed, augered or blown from pile to loader.

There is an inactive chip loader a few miles from my location, which I've looked at modeling. Now you have me thinking again.

Would go w/ the middle plan w/ the large structure on opposite side of mainline. If this place is 5' above floor, that building will always "get in the way".
