I am working in Lucky Penny Yard this week. I am going to have a yard service road at the far end between THE Engine Shop and the THE Turntable that crosses all the tracks there...8 tracks total. Queston: Do railroad yards have crossbucks for roads within their own property ? Or does the railroad figure their employees are smart enough to know they are working around moving trains and that they are smart enough to look both ways before driving over any track ? "DOHhhhhhhhhh!":wideeyes:
They will often have crossbucks at the outermost tracks, in some cases there is a small sign underneath that says how many tracks (ie "8 Tracks"). In modern times they are very safety conscious for liability reasons.
Roseville yard on the SP...ahem, I mean UP has crossbucks on some crossings, https://maps.google.com/maps?safe=o...gl=us&ei=n9I4UvTfFczWigKDyIGADA&ved=0CJsBELYD Crossing for workers: https://maps.google.com/maps?safe=o...gl=us&ei=n9I4UvTfFczWigKDyIGADA&ved=0CJsBELYD and does not have crossbucks on others. https://maps.google.com/maps?safe=o...gl=us&ei=n9I4UvTfFczWigKDyIGADA&ved=0CJsBELYD https://maps.google.com/maps?safe=o...gl=us&ei=n9I4UvTfFczWigKDyIGADA&ved=0CJsBELYD Mainline has them, yard and service tracks do not (at least in this example).
It really depends. In some of the yards I work it there may or may not be a sign. It can be a stop sign or cross bucks. If you want to put them in go for it. Kevin
I should clarify with a pic: There are only 6 tracks the road will cross...dooooohhh !!! LOL The 2 tracks with the double crossover are mainlines...but well within the yard. The next 2 tracks are THE Fuel Island. The other 2 are out of THE Engine Shop. I am thinking 2 crossbucks without gates at each end of the road may look ok. BUT...if they normally dont use em...it is less 'stuff' I will probably break off when cleaning track...lol ;-)
I've seen them only on the outside tracks with the number of tracks to be crossed indicated on a separate sign below the crossbucks. Also when some of those tracks to be crossed are mainline and not governed by yard speeds there was another sign that stated high speed crossing. Thus you needed to watch out for the 3:10 to Yuma that was running late with a clear board making up time.
Thnxs guys. No crossbucks or signs....wheewwwwwwwwwwww. I hate when I am cleaning track and hear a **S N A P ** ;-)
