I'm doing up the Bmann S4 into D&H black/yellow scheme. Looking at pix on Bridge Line H.S. site, the horns appear to be very interesting. But no closeup pix to be found. They have a multi-chime horn, but also wires/air lines, something coming from hood to front of horns. Can anyone shed some light on this, and what type of horns they had? Thanks, Joe D
Joe,check out the D&H Virtual Museum..There's a few good pics of the s series locos on there.Looks like there's a three chime horn mounted out from the cab on a three legged bracket, and what looks to be a "U" shaped hoop in front of them.[Antenna?] http://www.trainweb.org/dhvm/
Thanks Lou.Forgot about that site. Better pix of that area. Very strange. I have a mix of the horns from BLMA, so should have a horn to use. I'll have to go with a styrene bracket. That wire loop is strange, though. Joe D

Joe, it's a good thing Lou came through, as I was lost. I spent time looking in all of my books and on the web and couldn't come up with a clear enough picture of the horns. I Too forgot about D&Hvm. Nice clear photos of the horns. Now we need to know if the weird bracket is an antenna or a brace for the horns. Got a soft spot for the D&H S4 as it was the first engine I can clearly remember as it switched the A&P warehouse in South Scranton near my house. Good catch, Lou ! and nice horn info from point353.
Have blown up photo with Genuine Fractal software. It appears to be a mounting bracket. Don't think it would even show with "3 ft rule". Joe D
Funny..I've seen that D&H horn,Ed Kaspriskie lives near me,is a member of the local historical society..Has a Dodge truck with a compressor and HUGE air tanks in back, and a rack of horns on it..PITY the guy that ticks him off on the road,LOL!! http://atsf.railfan.net/airhorns/m3.html
I did a bunch more research, and came to the conclusion that it is definitely either a doohicky (sp?) or a whatchamacallit. But it is NOT a thingamajig.
My guess (which is really wild and not scientific) is that this is an ice breaker, that is for protection for the horns from icicles, although it doesn't look that "robust". Mark
Strange spot for an ice breaker and not well supported. Me thinks it's something else - the antenna guess above is as good as any.
Antennae, AFAIK, are on cab roof. We need on old D&H head to chime in. I still say horn support bracket. Joe D
Joe,I think it has to be an antenna. It's far too flimsy to be any kind of bracket, and it looks like it's right across the center of the horn bell.If it needed to be that high for tuning purposes,it couldn't go on the roof..
Just looked at some S3 pics on the D&H Virtual Museum..Here's a pic from there from Ted Slavinski..Right where that loop is,looks to be a later style antenna.. http://www.trainweb.org/dhvm/images/dhrr_diesel/ALCO_S-4/Ted-Slavinski/3037-01.jpg
Looking at the pictures on that D&H site, those vertical rods sure look to be supports for the airhorns -- one horn bell appears to be held between the top of the loop and a short horizontal bar under it. There are two locos like that in the photo. Considering how far those 3-chime horns stick out from the front of the cab, it may be some shop guy thought they might sag or fall off and thus rigged up these supports. Whether they came first and were removed because they weren't needed, or were needed later and added, I have no idea.
I do think it's an antenna, as this pic(faintly) shows the gizmo in front of horns. http://www.trainweb.org/dhvm/images/dhrr_diesel/ALCO_S-2/UNKNOWN/3023-1.jpg Background makes it hard to delineate, but see the highlights from sun. I might try to give modeling that a whirl. Joe D
OK, somehow I missed the last few posts from Lou D, as he had link for same photo I posted. Could that building in back be more confusing, or what?
