With N scale sound decorders becoming more common (really intrigued by TCS' new Wow decoders which will be coming in N) one idea I've had is to grind out most of the fuel tank on the frame, install a speaker on one side and fill the rest with tungsten. Assuming roughly half the mass lost can be filed by the tungsten ballast you should regain all the lost weight for the speaker enclosure.
